[3349] She and Louis IX also had these children who survived adolescence: Jean Tristan (Count of Nevers), Pierre (Count of Alencon), Isabella (m. Thibaud V, Count of Champagne and King of Navarre), Blanche (m. Ferdinand de la Cerda of Castile) and Marguerite (m. Jean, Duke of Brittany). http://www.guide2womenleaders.com offers: "The wife of King Louis of France (d. 1270) since 1234 she challenged her father's appointment of her youngest sister as heir to the country. She sought to employ force of arms, calling upon her son, her nephew Edward II. of England, and the German king Rudolph of Habsburg. She did not give up her claim until after the death of Charles of Anjou in 1285, when Philip the Bold succeeded in getting her to accept an income from the county of Anjou in exchange for her rights in Provence. She accompanied her on crusades and spent her last years in a monastery."

Alan resided at Oswestry in Salop and was Sheriff of Shropshire. The Web site http://www-personal.umich.edu/~tseaton/Genealogy/Family/FG02/FG02_203.htm in 2003 reports that Alan also had a son, Walter Fitz Alan (d. 1177) who was first High Steward about 1660 and who m. Eschina de Londris, daughter of Thomas De Londris; Walter and Eschina had Alan Fitz Walter, second High Steward (d. 1204; m. Alesta, daughter of Morgund, Earl of Marr). Cf. http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Acres/9466/duntanlich.html which reports "He married Avelina de Hesdin, daughter of Ernulf de Hesdin, and had three sons - (1) Simon (Jordan) fitz Alan, Dapifer of Dol; (2) William fitz Alan, ancestor of the fitz Alans, Earls of Arundel; (3) and Walter fitz Alan, First High Steward."
http://www.tudorplace.com.ar/FITZALAN.htm states "having participated in the Conquest, obtained by the gift of King William the Conqueror, the barony and castle of Oswaldestre, Salop, and Milcham, Norfolk, some of which belonged to Meredith, Prince of Powys ap Bleddyn, King of Powys. He received the shreivalty of Shropshire from King Henry I. While his parentage is more or less obscure, there is evidence to show that Flaald, his father, lived in Brittany and was a brother of Alain, seneschal of Dol, descended from the old Armonican counts of Dol and Dinan. Alain Fitz Flaald was also the father or grandfather of William Fitzalan, steward to David I, King of Scotland, ancestor of the Stuarts, kings of that country. Alain Fitz Flaald was also the father of William Fitzalan, to whom Henry II gave in second marriage Isabel De Say, baroness of Clun, the greatest heiress of Shropshire. He was ancestor of John Fitzalan, who married Isabel, sister and co-heiress of Hugh d'Albigny. Upon a division of Hugh's property at his death in 1243, the castle of Arundel was assigned to John, son of the aforementioned John and Isabel, who thus became the first Earl of eventually passed to Mary, daughter and heiress of Henry Fitzalan, who carried it, together Arundel of the Fitzalan line. This property with the earldom and the barony of Maltravers, to her husband Thomas Howard, Duke of Norfolk, in which family it still remains. Alain Fitz Flaald and his wife Adeline were benefactors to priory of Castle Acre, early in the reign of Henry I. The Complete Peerage vol.V,pp.391-392."
http://encyclopedia.jrank.org/STE_SUS/STEWART_STUART.html states: "Alan the son of Flaald, which Flaald was a brother of Alan, steward (or seneschal) of Dol in Brittany. This elder Alan, whose name occurs in Breton documents before 1080, went on crusade in 1097, and was apparently succeeded by his brother Flaald, whose son, the younger Alan, enjoyed the favour of Henry I., who bestowed on him Mileham and its barony in Norfolk, where he founded Sporle Priory. By the daughter of Ernulf de Hesdin (in Picardy), a Domesday baron, he was father of at least three sons: Jordan, who succeeded to the family office of steward of Dol; William, who inherited Mileham and other estates in England, and who founded the great baronial house of Fitz Alan (afterwards earls of Arundel); and Walter, who was made by David I steward (dapifer) or seneschal of Scotland."

Nicholas (III) was the founder of Ickesburg, Perry Co., PA in 1816. See notes for his daughter, Margaret. He entered service in the Continental Army on 1 Oct 1780 when the 4th Battalion of the Philadelphia Militia was mustered in. He was then age 16. Family history reports that he served until the end of the war (3 Sep 1783), but application for a service connected grant shows army private tenure as six months. He may have had a special assignment, perhaps as a spy, as his name does not appear in later official military records.
An alternate date for his birth is given on a chart supplied by Diane Harding as 1 Oct 1764. Nicholas was confirmed in the New Hanover ("Swamp") Church, the oldest Lutheran church in America, where colonial Ickes records are found.
He first married Mary Magdalene Christmas of Montgomery Co., PA and their first child, born 5 Oct 1787, was baptised 12 Dec 1789. He moved to present-day Perry Co., PA about 1797. They had five children, the fourth perhaps died young. Mary Magdalene died in 1797. She and Nicholas sold 228 acres to John Hendricks of Limerick Twp.
Nicholas must have married widowed Susan (Loy) Bernheisel about July 1797, shortly after his first wife died. Children (and their spouses) are from D.A.R. application for National # 312380, Verna Elnora Harding.
Ickesburg was originally in Cumberland County, and was on the hunting grounds of the Tuscarawa Indians (southernmost of the Iroquois tribes). Nicholas and some of his kin were early settlers there following the end of the War for Independence. They had good relationships with the Native Americans, who brought lead to them to trade pound for pound for butter. The Ickes families found the species of oak tree in the area ideal for use in tanning, and eventually received gold medals at the Paris Exhibitions as producing the finest leather in the world. They operated a trading post to acquire hides and furs in southeastern Wyoming. They were also coopers, produced dairy products and ran a icensed distillery.
"History of Perry County...," H. H. Hain (Harrisburg, PA: 1922), p.1051 states: "Nicholas Ickes left Montgomery County in 1795 and settled in Perry County of 230 acres of land bought of Robert Robinson. He also purchased 260 acres of mountain land ofrom Dr. Mailey, 130 from Charles Elliot. He also purchased 170 acres from George Sanderson in 1816. on which he lived and where he died in 1848, aged eight-four years. Ickesburg is located on part of this tract, hence the name . . . It was laid out in 1816."
