[51572] "The Ellsworth American [Ellsworth, Maine], 23 May 2016": "Trenton - Forest Hilton Hanscom Jr., 75, left us on May 17, 2016, after being diagnosed with an aggressive cancer three weeks prior. Born in Lincoln, Maine, to Forest H. and Edith (Farnsworth) Hanscom Sr., Hilton graduated from Lee Academy. Hilton co-owned and operated The Green Moth Store and Cabins in Trenton with his wife, Carlene, for over 20 years. After their 'retirement' from the store, he went on to work for Bar Harbor Public Works until his retirement in 2009. Hilton loved his family, friends, stock car racing, baseball, the woods and ocean. He loved telling stories about driving trucks, racing the 8-Ball car on the dirt track at Graham Lake and things that happened at the store. Hilton is survived by his wife of 53 years, Carlene (Grant); daughter, Lisa Ellen and son in law, Todd Winger; brother, Floyd and wife, Roberta; brothers-in law - Herbert Grant and Joel and Tammy Grant; Aunt Virginia Farnsworth; a special cousin, Pam Farnsworth; good friends - Kelton and Janet Muise, Robert and Marsha Carter and many nieces, nephews and cousins."

The unverified file MZQZ-73B in familysearch.org contains this note:
Thomas Sawyer (1649-1736) was the son of Thomas Sawyer (1616-1706) and Mary Prescott. The elder Thomas Sawyer was one of the first six settlers in Nashaway Plantation (now Lancaster), Massachusetts. Thomas (the one born 1649) was likely one of the first children born in Lancaster. The Early Records of Lancaster, Massachusetts. 1643-1725, published in 1884, shows Thomas as born 2 (5) 1649. In the early Puritan days, names of months were dropped, due to their Roman or pagan origins, and the year began March 25; therefore March was numbered the first month, and February the twelfth. Therefore Thomas was born July 2, 1649. See https://archive.org/details/earlyrecordslan00masgoog page 313. His marriage to his first wife (see page 321) was recorded 11 (8) 1670, so October 11, 1670. Sarah's last name was not given, and Thomas was referred to as "Thomas Sawyer, Jr." Not long afterwards, there is an entry for their first child, Mary, 30 (11) 1671, so January 30, 1671, daughter of Thomas Sawyer Jr. and Sarah.
We are fairly sure that his first wife's maiden name was "Fairbanks." Mary Sawyer, Sarah's daughter, is mentioned in the will of John Fairbank. The full text of the will can be found in the book, "Genealogy of the Fairbanks Family in America, 1633-1897," page 35, that can be found online here: https://books.google.com/books?id=rbJ3WLoOEo0C&pg=PA35&lpg=PA35&dq=john+fairbanks+and+sarah+fiske&source=bl&ots=9K6iJBE5X1&sig=h9Ck6U2cM5VjQojZSV2fZkB4S98&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0CCIQ6AEwAWoVChMIkuL80ur5xwIV0jiICh3nOQrN#v=onepage&q=john%20fairbanks%20and%20sarah%20fiske&f=false.
I have seen on the internet where people have said that Sarah had twins in 1671, but I have never found proof of that. Only 1 birth is mentioned in the early records, and only one child is mentioned in the grandfather' will that was written in 1684.
Unfortunately Sarah died young. In the early records, her death is recorded as Sarah Sawyer, wife of Thomas Junior, 2 (1) 1672, so March 2, 1672. See page 323.
Not long after Thomas married 2) Hannah _____, 21 (9) 1672, so November 21, 1672 (see page 321). Some say her maiden name was Lewis and that she was the daughter of William Lewis and Amy Wells and was born 18 Mar 1647/48 in Roxbury, Suffolk, Mass. I have also seen her name on the internet as Hannah Houghton. I am not sure how to reconcile this. They had five children: Hannah, William, Joseph, Bezaleel, and Elias. Hannah apparently died before 1718, when Thomas married his third wife.
The Town of Lancaster had many troubles with the local Indians. King Philip's War, was an armed conflict between Native American inhabitants of present-day New England and English colonists and their Native American allies, occurred between in 167578. Lancaster was the site of a smaller Indian attack in 1675 when 8 people were killed, and a much larger attack in February, 1676, when upwards of 55 people were slain or captured. The city was abandoned, burned to the ground, and uninhabited for about 3 years. Sadly, Thomas' brother Ephraim was killed at this time.
So it appears that Thomas and Hannah's oldest children were born during the period of time after Lancaster was burn down, and before the family returned to rebuild. Hannah's birth record is found in Marlborough vital records (Sawyer, Hannah [Sayer. MR], d. Thomas and Hannah, May 23, 1675). There is also a record for their second child in Marlborough: Sawyer, William [Sayer. MR], s. Thomas and Hannah, Feb. , 1679. I believe that the rest of their children were born in Lancaster, although their births were not noted in the Early Records.
The Early Records, p. 290, says, "Thomas, Junior, who seems to have inherited a share of his grandfather John Prescott's energy and capacity, established the second saw-mill in Lancaster, before 1700."
Queen Anne's War (17021713), as the North American theater of the War of the Spanish Succession was known in the British colonies, was the second in a series of French and Indian Wars fought between France and England. In 1708, Thomas and his son Elias were captured by the Indians and taken to Canada. When the party reached Montreal, Thomas offered to put up a mill on the Chambly River, on condition that the French governor would obtain the release of all the captives. Thus the first saw mill in Canada was built by Thomas Sawyer. He was liberated, but his son Elias was detained for a time to teach the Canadians the art of sawing.
Thomas married his third wife Mary Rice on 15 July 1718 in Lancaster. She was the widow of Josiah White, the daughter of Thomas Rice and Mary King, and was born 4 Sep 1656 in Sudbury, Middlesex, Mass. They had no children. She died 22 Aug 1733 in Lancaster. The early records of Lancaster, referenced above, only extended to 1725, but there is another book containing vital records of Lancaster, known as "The Birth, Marriage, and Death Register, Church Records and Epitaphs of ..." that can be found online here: https://books.google.com/books?id=MIxPJ3Eu_nsC&pg=PA381&lpg=PA381&dq=Thomas+Sawyer+and+Sarah+fairbanks&source=bl&ots=cd8NYy1kJW&sig=naSv0P5qVX2eL6guyHR4odEXniA&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0CCwQ6AEwBDgKahUKEwiQ_MOW6fnHAhULO4gKHfvWCj4#v=onepage&q=Thomas%20Sawyer%20and%20Sarah%20fairbanks&f=false. On page 17 it says, "Thomas Sawyer & Mary White were married July 15, 1718."
Thomas then married his fourth wife, Anna (the widow of Thomas Ross) 31 Dec 1733. She was born about 1699 and died Nov 1753 in Sterling, Worcester, Mass. They had no children. See page 26 of "The Birth, Marriage..." (referenced above): "Thomas Sawyer & Anna Ross, both of Lancaster, was married Decemb. 31: 1733."
He died on 5 September 1736 in Lancaster. He is buried in the Old Burial Field in Lancaster. The gravestone inscription was recorded as: "Here lyes Buried | ye Body of Mr. | thomas sawyer, | Who Died Septemb': | 5th; 1736, in y 89 | Year of His Age.
The last Will of Thomas Sawyer of Lancaster, yeoman, was dated 15 December 1735 and proved on 3 November 1736 in Worcester. He mentioned his children: William Sawyer, Joseph Sawyer, Bezaleel Sawyer, Elias Sawyer, Mary Rice, widow of Joshua Rice, late of Marlborough, and Hannah, wife of Jonathan Moore of Lancaster.
