[55229] "The Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]," 25 November 2023: "Whiting - Wendell G. Small, 85, of Lubec, passed away peacefully at home on Nov. 7, 2023. Wendell was born on March 26, 1938, to Phyllis (Grant) Small and Douglas R. Small Sr. Wendell was proud to tell you he had served in the United States Coast Guard and learned to love the water. Wendell returned to Lubec, where he would meet the mother of his beloved son, Wendell Troy. He moved his family to Connecticut, where he was employed with Hartford Hospital. Upon his return to Lubec, Wendell became the owner/operator of a well known bayview bakery, known for the best bread, doughnuts, and baked beans around. Wendell soon returned to the water through diving and commercial fishing. Wendell was known locally as quite an outdoorsman whether it be in the woods with his good friend of 20 years, Jack Bragg or on the water fishing. Wendell had a deep love for music and dancing where he met his partner, Jean Mathews, they could be found weekly spinning around a dance floor. Wendell will be remembered by all that had the honor to know him as a tall, kind, compassionate man. Wendell is survived by his only son, Wendell Troy Small of Utah; three grandsons, Michael, Aaron, and Spencer Small; sisters, Lynne Hatch and Linda Maker; his partner and beloved caregiver, Jean Mathews, who gave Wendell the grace of staying home; his dear friends, Chouan and Dixon, Jack and Lucille Bragg; neighbor, Roger and Linda; and many nephews, nieces, and cousins that loved him dearly. Wendell was predeceased by his parents, Phyllis and Douglas Sr.; brother, Douglas Jr. and partner of 15 years, Marge Peacock."
