[1685] Chosen German king in 936, Otto I was crowned by Hildebert, Archbishop of Mainz. His career of strong leadership in a tumultuous period gained consolidation of German power and, for him, the imperial crown (from Pope John XII 2 February 962). "The empire was less universal under Otto, its restorer, than Charlemagne, but what it lacked in splendour it gained in stability. His object was not to make the state religious but the church political, and the clergy must first be officials of the king, and secondly members of an ecclesiastical order. He shared the piety and superstitions of the age, and did much for the spread of Christianity. Although himself a stranger to letters he welcomed scholars to his court and eagerly seconded the efforts of his brother Bruno to encourage learning; and while he neither feared nor shirked battle, he was always ready to secure his ends by peace."{-Encyclopaedia Britannica, 1956, 16:965} By a concubine he had William (d. 968; Archbishop of Mainz); by Edith of Wessex he also had Matilda (d. 999; Abbess of Quedlinburg); he also had Henry (d. 954) and Bruno (d. 957), according to "The Carolingians," Pierre Riché (Philadelpha: U of PA Press, 1993), Table 3. Otto's life and times are dramatically portrayed in "The Last Apocalypse: Europe at the Year 1000 A.D.," James Reston, Jr. (New York: Doubleday, 1998), especially pp. 173ff. [3045] Casper arrived with his parents in 1731 aged 16 years, and they settled at Oley, Berks County, PA. He was grantee of a tract of land near New Berlin on Penn's Creek, Union Co.,PA, 1769. George is presumed to be one of his three sons. {-see William H. Egle, "Notes and Queries..." (Harrisburg Pub. Co., Harrisburg, PA, 1900 [1899 Ed.], p.166)} Michael, George and John Motz are listed consecutively in the "Supply and State Tax Lists of the County of Northumberland for the Years 1778 to 1788" under Penn's Twp. in PA Archives, Series 3, Vol. 19, p. 571. Ancestry.com suggests the meaning of the surname: "(also Mötz) nickname for a grubby, unkempt individual, or an obstinate one, from Swabian dialect motz dirt.variant of Mautz.short form of the personal name Matthäus (see Matthew)."
