[2110] Cospatrick was Earl of Northumberland (1067-72), first Earl of Dunbar (1072-75), Lord of Carlisle and Allerdale. He m. a sister of Edmund. {-Carr P. Collins, "Royal Ancestors of Magna Charta Barons" (Dallas, 1959, p. 229)} One lineage states that he is son of Maldred, Lord of Carlisle and Allerdale, who was slain in battle in 1045 and whose wife is Edith of England - Maldred is son of Crinan the Thane and Bethoc. Created Earl by William the Conqueror, he was soon deprived of the earldom and fled to Scotland where King Malcolm Canmore gave him Dunbar and adjoining lands. Burke's "Dormant and Extinct Peerages" (London, 1883) reports "The monks of Durham celebrated 15 December, 1069, the death of this Cospatricius, Earl and Monk; and, in 1821, a stone coffin inscribed on its lid, `+ Cospatricius Comes,' was found in the monks' burial ground at Durham." "The Scots Peerage, Vol. 3," James Balfour Paul (Edinburg: David Douglas, 1906), pp. 241-3, also gives Maldred (or Malcolm, ID 3257) as his father. Cospatric I visited Rome in 1061; his wife was a sister of Edmund per "Ancestral Roots..." (Balt., 1992), 34-22. Dunbar = Lothian. The LDS Church's unverified Ancestral File gives Cospatrick's wife as Aethelreda, Princess of England. Cf. http://www.electricscotland.com/webclans/dtog/dunbarpedigreebi00jagg.pdf for him and his descendants. In 2001 there is a Dunbar Clan site on the Internet at: http://www.tartans.com/clans/Dunbar/dunbar.html. See especially https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gospatric,_Earl_of_Northumbria. For Dunbar Castle, see http://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/dunbar/dunbarcastle. A fine description of Cospatric and his times is in "The Norman Conquest : The Battle of Hastings and the Fall of Anglo-Saxon England," Marc Morris (New York, Pegasus Books, 2014; ISBN13 9781605986517).

[27898] The line shown here is not verified; it is presented as found on Ray Gurganus' web site, www.gurganus.org, in 2007 which states Fulbert m. Doda _____[not the daughter of King Malcolm II of Scotland]. http://www.genealogy.theroyfamily.com/p26750.htm states "Fulbert has been described as 'polinctor' which translates more readily as 'embalmer', or one who prepares corpses for burial, but the traditon is strong that he was a tanner; and Falaise, Normandy was famous for its tanneries." Fulbert (aka Robert) is grandfather of William the Conqueror through Fulbert's daughter, Harlette.
