She was the last of the Tudor rulers of England. Although her legitimacy
was questioned and never settled (because an act of Parliament [1536]
invalidated the marriage of her parents and enabled Henry to marry his
third wife, Jane Seymour), both Parliament and Henry named as heirs to
this throne his children Edward, later Edward VI; Mary, later Mary I; and
Elizabeth, in that order.
Elizabeth spent her childhood away from the court and received an
excellent classical education under such scholars as Roger Ascham, who
influenced her greatly. Henry's sixth wife, Catherine Parr, later became
fond of the young Elizabeth and brought her back to court. She remained in
Catherine's charge after Henry's death and took no part in the political
intrigues following the coronation of her brother as King Edward VI. When
Edward died, Elizabeth became a partisan of her sister Mary, refusing to
support the revolt led by the English soldier and conspirator Sir Thomas
Wyatt (1521?-54) against Mary, who became queen in 1553. Nevertheless,
Mary, a devout Roman Catholic, was made uneasy by the Protestantism of
Elizabeth and her potential menace as an heir to the throne. In 1554,
Elizabeth was imprisoned on the false charge of having been implicated in
Wyatt's rebellion. She was later released, having outwardly professed
Roman Catholicism, and regained Mary's favor.
At the death of Mary in 1558, Elizabeth became queen, beginning one of the
greatest reigns in English history. At the time of Elizabeth's accession,
England was torn by religious strife, was economically insecure, and was
involved in a disastrous war with France. To these problems Elizabeth
brought a thorough education, innate shrewdness, and a skill in diplomacy
that she had constantly exercised during the reigns of Edward and Mary,
when one mistake might have meant her death. Although she was excessively
vain and capricious, her monarchial duties were always her primary
concern. Her policies and her colorful personality made her extremely
popular with her subjects. Elizabeth's statecraft was due, to a great
extent, to her choice of able and wise advisers, most notably Sir Francis
Walsingham and William Cecil, 1st Baron Burghley.
Religion was Elizabeth's initial problem as queen. She reverted to
Protestantism immediately after Mary's death, and her first Parliament
(1559) had a Protestant majority. Between 1559 and 1563, this Parliament
passed religious legislation that became the doctrinal basis of the Church
of England. In the Elizabethan Compromise (1559), the Church of England
became the established church, and throughout Elizabeth's reign Roman
Catholics and Puritans were persecuted.
Elizabeth's domination of the period to which her name became attached was
due in part to the exuberant national spirit that she inspired and that
characterized all England during the second half of the 16th century. She
restored popular confidence in the monarchy, and a wave of prosperity
swept every field of endeavor. With the religious question settled and the
war with France concluded by the Treaty of Cateau-Cambrésis (1559),
England was able to develop industrially and economically. Under
Elizabeth's direction, the government began to regulate commerce and
industry on a national scale. England grew to be a great maritime power
with the exploits of such mariners as Sir Francis Drake and Sir Martin
Frobisher. A new system of standard coinage was introduced in 1560 to
replace the silver coins that had been considerably debased during the
preceding three reigns. As a result, prices fell to normal levels and
confidence in English money was restored. Foreign trade, encouraged by the
government, became a great capitalistic enterprise. The Royal Exchange of
London was opened in 1566, and the company of merchants that later became
the English East India Company was chartered in 1600. Above all this
activity stood the figure of Elizabeth. In the eyes of her subjects,
Elizabeth was England.
From the beginning of her reign, Elizabeth's marital status was a
political concern because there was no English heir to the throne.
Parliament insistently petitioned her to marry, but she replied with the
statement that she intended to live and die a virgin, and she became known
as the Virgin Queen. Her statement did not prevent her from toying
constantly with the idea of marriage. She was besieged by royal suitors,
each of whom she favored when it was in her political interest to do so.
Her affections, however, were bestowed on a succession of favorites,
notably Robert Dudley, 1st earl of Leicester, Sir Walter Raleigh, and
Robert Devereux, 2d earl of Essex.
Elizabeth's most delicate political problem was that involving her Roman
Catholic cousin, Mary, queen of Scots. Mary sought refuge in England after
being defeated in battle by her half brother, James Stuart, earl of Moray
(1531?-70). Elizabeth immediately imprisoned Mary because the Catholic
monarchs of Europe and her own Catholic subjects considered Elizabeth
illegitimate. By their reasoning, Mary was the lawful queen of England.
Thus, to Elizabeth, Mary was the potential center of conspiracy. Mary was
kept captive for years, giving rise to many plots by English Catholics for
her release. When in 1586 Walsingham, then secretary of state, discovered
a plot to assassinate Elizabeth and place Mary on the throne of England,
Elizabeth reluctantly agreed to have Mary executed in 1587. The execution
had serious results. Philip II of Spain had, for years, been troubled by
the raids of English mariners on his colonial possessions. Because both
Mary and Philip were Catholic, her death provided him with an added
stimulus to prosecute the war with England that had been going on since
1585; he therefore sent a fleet to invade the country in 1588. The Spanish
Armada, however, suffered an inglorious defeat, and England eventually
took the place of Spain as the great colonizer of the New World and the
reigning power on the seas. Moreover, by inflicting such defeat on
Catholic Spain, England established Protestantism as a force in
international politics.
Elizabeth's popularity waned toward the end of her reign because of her
heavy expenditures and abuse of royal power. Moreover, her policies became
weaker, her later ministers being less able than Cecil or Walsingham. The
close of Elizabeth's reign was disturbed by a revolt in Ireland that was
led by Hugh O'Neill. The 2d earl of Essex, Elizabeth's favorite,
unsuccessfully led an army against the Irish. When he returned to England,
he led a revolt against the queen and was executed in 1601. Following his
death, Elizabeth was disconsolate. She spent the last years of her life
unhappy and alone, having outlived a glorious age, the beginning of the
history of what would become modern England.
In addition to being a time of political triumphs, the Elizabethan era was
notable as one of the greatest periods of English literature. Edmund
Spenser, Christopher Marlowe, and Shakespeare were only a few of the host
of writers who created their great works under Elizabeth. The dramatic
personality of Elizabeth became the subject of a voluminous literature.

[3577] http://www.bartold.com/genealogy/origins.html offers in 2003: "The first Bertold in Swabia (from Friuli) appears to have arrived in Swabia around 860, married, and had at least three children. Erchanger, Bertold and their sister Kunegunda. Kunegunda's father is mentioned as either Bertold or Erchanger, and her mother was supposedly Gisela, daugter of Emperor Louis II. Note: I have seen it listed that Kunegunda's parents were Gisela and Erchanger, but the father's name is unlikely. The only other occurance of Erchanger that I have seen (in any genealogy) is Gisela's grandfather on her mother's side. Since Kunegunda's brothers are named Erchanger and Bertold, it makes more sense that her father was named Bertold. Although the Bertold name has not yet vanished from Swabian history, it moves quickly to Bavaria. Kunegunda married Luitpold of Bavaria sometime before 890, since their son Arnulf becomes Duke in 907, when Luitpold is killed in battle. Luitpold was Count of Nordgau, Duke of Carinthia and Duke of Bavaria (from 889), although he dies in battle against the Magyars. Arnulf must be at least 12 to take over, although it's more likely he was even older, so he was clear born before 895. Luitpold and Kunegunda's second son is named Bertold, again supporting the notion that her father was named Bertold. They do not have a son named Erchanger. Although, it is quite possible that Luitpold and Kunegunda had more children, that are not mentioned. In the chronicles of Reisensburg, it says that it is very likely that Kunegunda brought the Reisenburg with her to Bavaria as a wedding present. Now the Reisensburg was even then an ancient castle, likely the first in Germany. If Kunegunda brought it as a present, her parents must have been wealthy. The Reisensburg is located somewhat closer to Regensburg than it is to the Hohentwiel. After Luitpold died, Kunegunda then married in 913 to Conrad, King of the Germans (from 911-918). They had at least one chld, so it is likely that Kunegunda was not much more than 40 then, born after 870, rather than before. Supposing she was born in 873, Bertold (III) was 31 years old when she was born, and she was 40 When she married King Conrad. If Arnulf was born in 890, she was 17 when he was born, and he was 17 when he took over as Duke. Another point supporting Kunegunda's noble lineage: If Kunegunda was able to marry the Duke of Bavaria, and later the King of Germany, who both should have been very concerened with bloodlines, she must have been the daughter of someone more important than a local Swabian Count Bertold. So in my estimation, her mom must have been a royal, and it seems to point to Gisela." However, Gisela's husband was apparently Eberhard who appears to have died before this daughter was born! - so this speculation is doubtful - AEM. www.bartold.com also states that "After Luitpold's death, Cunegunda married Conrad I King of Germany."

I have not verified the ancestry given here! It is provided by Joe S. Creager (6320 NE 157th St.. Bothel, WA 98011 12/7/95, based on Ernest Weeks' research housed at the New York State Library per JSC). What is known is that Leonard resided in the Greenland and Sandy Beach area of NH, arriving in 1655 from Compton Martin, Somersetshire, England. He was selectman of Portsmouth, then constable and sheriff. In addition to Mary, he and Mary had: John, Samuel, Joseph, Capt. Joshua (b. 1674, m. Comfort Hubbard), Jonathan, Margaret and Sarah. The NH Genealogical Digest gives his year of birth as 1635. 05-July-1660 he received grants of 44, 34 and 10 acres of land and in February, 1661 he was settled at Winnicut Rover, Greenland where he lived out his life. {Note: "History of Coos County [NH]", p. 378, states he was born in Wells, Somersetshire.} His brick house in Greenland is the oldest native brick home in New England and is on the National Register of Historic Places; it was built about 1710 in such a way as to resist Indian attacks, and is on Rt. 101 and open to the public - see http://www.weeksbrickhouse.org. A disposition dated 06-Oct-1705 gives Leonard's age as 73 years, in which case his birth year would be 1632 or 1633. He was baptised 07-Aug-1639 in Compton Martin, Moreton, Somersetshire. [cf. "The information which I posted on reply 133 (in the Weeks Forum online) was taken from the first book written by Robert D. Weeks and published in 1885, called Genealogy of the family of George Weekes of Dorchester, Mass. 1635 to 1650. Copies of this book are available through the New England Historic Genealogical Society in Boston, Mass. I had also told you that the Rev. Jacob Chapman had published a book on the families of Leonard Weeks of New Hampshire, and that this book is also available from NEHGS. As for Carol Anderson being a Weeks family historian ??? I have written to her several times on a discrepency of William and John Weeks of Falmouth, Mass. and know for sure that her facts are not correct, and I would like to get them straightened out, but as of this date, she has not had the decency to answer my letters. Jim McLoughlin who is the webmaster of "The Weeks Family Registry answered my letter (for Carol ???) advised that when they first established the Weeks Registry there was a mildly heated debate about some heritage, and many people had different opinions. I have a problem with my Slocum line also. It seems everybody takes the step that an unknown wife or husband are given names because they were close friends, before marriage... but they do not have definite proof. I think you have also contacted Rev. Frank H. Weeks, who lives in Rhode Island. I believe he is of the Leonard line and supposedly is working on an update of the Chapman Book. One other piece of info I can offer, is that Robert Weeks did much research here in the U.S. and the U.K. The latter, much of the files were either destroyed by fire or weather, the records being kept in a tower in England."
An internet posting in Ancestor Chronicles - Our Kin And Their Times 8 August 2006 states "The name Weeks is said to have been a Devonshire name of Saxon origin; but it was also common in parts of Somersetshire. Tradition says that Leonard came from Wells, in that county. The parish records of Compton Martin contain the name of Leonard Wyke, bapt. 1639, and his brother William about two years earlier, sons of John Wyke of Moreton, which is in that parish."
The Weeks Library web site - http://www.weekslibrary.org/history.html - offers: "The first recorded trial involving a crime committed in Greenland took place in June 1660, at 'a Countie Court held in Portsmouth.' In it, Leonard Weeks was charged with 'Swareing by god & Callinge John Hall of Greenland ould dogg & ould Slave & [saying] that he would knocke him in the head: this is testifi[e]d by Thomas Peverley & Joseph Attkinson.' Leonard pled guilty and was sentenced to pay ten shillings, '& to have an admonition for his reviling & threttning speeches.' Weeks was tried before a jury that included his neighbor (and future father-in-law) Samuel Haines."
