The Ancestral File gives his ancestry, but it shows his father being born before his grandfather, and therefore is quite unreliable. Saul M. Montes-Bradley (saul@bradleyfoundation.org) writes via email 10 Feb 2004: "Alas, I have not yet found a link to this line. This seems to be the son of John who d. 1 June 1672 in Rehoboth, MA. If so, I believe they are of the same family of Richard and George, but still no proof. Today, I found in a book printed in New Hampshire quite some time ago, the tantalizing reference: "Richard Sutton who signed the Town Orders at Lancaster in 1653 [my guy] was undoubtedly the grandson of James and Isabella (Prescott) Sutton, who were married at Syandish Parish, Lancashire (ENG) 20 August 1570." [Isabella's mother was a Standish and James' entry is, of course, Jacobus] It goes on to refer to a number of Lancastrians who found themselves at Lancaster, MA at that time, and who were "relations" in the Old Country. I have grown to respect the peculiar relationship among "relations" back then. Their trade, all weavers, is also quite telling. A brief check yields the right names: Richard, Elizabeth, Katherine, John, Mary and George as the most common for the Suttons of the area. I think that a thorough check of the parish records there and, perhaps, within a few miles' radius will yield interesting results." Cf. the ancestry available through http://home.earthlink.net/~leolney/Homepage.html in 2004 (not verified). Ancestry.com offers: "Sutton Name Meaning - English: habitational name from any of the extremely numerous places called Sutton, from Old English suð 'south' + tun 'enclosure', 'settlement'."
