[54189] "The Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]," 5 July 2023: "Tewksbury, MA - On June 24, 2023, Torrey Alden Sylvester, 86, trial lawyer, USNR Captain, husband, dad, grandfather and great-grandfather, crested his last peak peacefully encircled by his family. No doubt the view from that peak was stunning and even as his family was saying 'there he goes' his son, Sam, was saying 'here he comes.' Torrey was born in Waterville, Maine, on November 10, 1936, but soon the little family moved north to his beloved Aroostook County, where he lived his early years between Mars Hill and Houlton, and graduated from Houlton High School in 1954, followed by the University of Maine in Orono in 1959. His years spent on the farm in Mars Hill during WWII shaped him greatly being part of the work ethic of a potato and dairy farm. He valued highly his relationships with his grandparents and great-grandparents, and numerous cousins. Uncle Sam then called and he served six years on active duty and twenty more in the Naval Reserves, retiring in1986 as a captain in the U.S. Navy. His six years of active duty from 1959 to 1964 saw him serving as gunnery officer on a destroyer in the North Atlantic and then as executive officer on a minesweeper in Sasebo, Japan. He had a front row seat to the Bay of Pigs debacle in 1961, where he was one of two officers to step ashore on Cuban soil to rescue more than 60 Cuban freedom fighters. He witnessed close up the return of Gus Grissom aboard the Mercury Seven capsule in the waters off the bow of his destroyer. He even had Grissom's helmet on his bunk for a brief period until his skipper called for its return. Then followed the Cuban Missile Crisis in late '62, and he was extended a year on his destroyer. But Torrey had personal plans of his own as he had fallen in love with a prairie chick from Saskatchewan. Thanks to his ebullient nature and his oft quoted line 'You folks travelin' far,' he and Jennifer met on the coast of Maine in 1957, wrote long letters with short visits over six years and so he opted for a 2-year tour in Japan in order to have his new wife accompany him. Their 65-year long love affair is the stuff of legends. His love of the Navy almost won out when his tour was over, but instead he and Jennifer returned from Japan to start a family and Torrey continued as an active reservist. At the age of 30 he was encouraged to go to law school. This was no easy task with two small boys, but he did and found his calling. He held down two jobs to supplement the GI Bill, finished near the bottom of his class, but passed the bar on the first attempt and was off and running as a trial lawyer. All this with now three children. He moved back to Houlton with his new family to practice law with his boyhood friend, Forrest Barnes. He immediately showed his community spirit through Rotary, Masons, Elks, First Baptist Church and countless committees supporting the betterment of his town and county. As a Rotarian he loved the annual radio auction and the Meduxnekeag Canoe Race, and he ran the Polio Plus program for many years. If he wasn't organizing the canoe race, he was in it, taking his wife, his kids, his minister and a granddaughter down the river to mention a few. His Paul Harris Fellow was of great pride to him. Masons was another very important element of Torrey's community spirit and he served twice as Grand Master. He loved the ritual and discipline of the brotherhood. His love of music was perhaps his greatest passion outside of his family. It had him involved in countless choirs, ensembles and quartets. Being a tenor 'one of God's chosen people,' he was heard to say, put him always in demand for which he was never too humble to accept. He was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church and choir practice night was sacred in his family. But barbershopping remained his favorite genre and he was part of four different quartets between Maine and New Brunswick for many years. Good harmony always brought tears to his eyes. Music was always playing somewhere. He and Jennifer were jitterbug dancers from the moment they met and the nextgen loved to watch them. And then there were the old hymns and, of course, The Messiah. He fully embraced the words of a very old hymn, 'Farther along we'll know all about it. Farther along we'll understand why . . .' He was willing to wait to know. And now the wait is over. In the meantime, he tried to live his life as God would have him do. He was a good and faithful servant. His beloved Mt. Katahdin drew him every year for more than 50 climbs in summer and winter. He took all his children and most of his grandchildren up his mountain, once on his back across the knife edge and taught them about the trees, the rocks and the animal tracks. His love of nature, the woods, and the crystal-clear northern Maine lakes and streams were his passion, and he was utterly at home in a canoe on a meandering stream catching trout. And then there were the stars. The constellations and their meaning fascinated him and he taught anyone who would listen about them. Camp at East Grand Lake was where the heavens exploded with stars and the family would lie on their back on the dock just watching. At times he seemed larger than life with his goal of climbing the highest peaks on the seven continents. He succeeded in four and then settled for bagging all the 4,000 footers in New England. He was a founding member and vice president of the International Appalachian Trail (IAT), and was instrumental in getting the organization to recognize that Mars Hill Mountain was part of the Appalachian Mountain range and should be included in the trail plans. The little things in life mattered to him too. A cold beer by a warm 'small' campfire with the moon rising and the loons calling would bring him to tears. And then there were the babies, grands and one great. His heart nearly burst. He was a born teacher always trying to imbue in his children the love of learning. He had little patience for anyone who did not want to hear what he had to say but most listened aptly. He loved a good limerick and some of his were even G rated! Cribbage was a particular favorite of his and he taught all of his offspring and most of his grandchildren how to play. He also made hundreds of cribbage boards and gave everyone in the family one, as well as donating many for fundraising. He and Jennifer solved many a problem over a late-night game. When asked, he would always say that the best thing in his life was his partner in Jennifer. They weathered many ups and downs, the lowest of which was the loss of their son, Sam, in 2004, but they weathered all with dignity, respect for each other and always love. They were a lifelong 'teaching moment ' for all their children and grands. They were the yin and yang of parenting and they worked as a team, although Jennifer would say that it was much easier when Torrey was away with the Navy and she could make all the decisions, which usually involved something fun and silly. Torrey's imprint on the family will continue through the generations as the stories pass down and his oft-stated saying, 'Who has more fun than people?' will be his gift to them all. He was predeceased by his mother, Erma (Allen) Sylvester; his father, Fred A. Sylvester; and his 'Beamish Boy,' Samuel Knott. He is survived by his life partner: wife, Jennifer (Fusedale) Sylvester; and his three children, Steven Alden and his wife, Aurora, and son, Lucas; late son Sam's daughters, Willow Grant and Lyra Cole; Susannah Torrey Sylvester Trudeau and her husband, Stephen, and their children, Jacob, Pammy, and her husband, Michael Mastrullo, Ethan, Adam, Jayden and Izyiah; and Linda Aveling and her four-legged pet, Cleo, affectionately called Pooch McDog by Torrey, ever the nicknamer. A new generation is represented by great-grandson, Mikey Mastrullo. Torrey is also survived by his two younger sisters, whom he adored, Kim Sylvester Rinfret of Nanaimo, BC, Canada, and Rachel Sylvester Good and her husband, Tom, of Monticello, Maine; and his special sister-in-law, Dorcas Oleskiw of Saskatoon, SK, Canada; brother-in-law, Anthony Bainbridge and wife, Linda, of Codford, England; along with many nieces and nephews, some of whom considered him their second Dad."
