[2136] John was first Baron Ferrers of Chartley; also Seneschal of Aquitaine; summoned to Parliament 06 Feb 1299. {-ref.: "Burke's Dormant Peerage," London, 1883.} Birth date and place from John S. Wurts, "Magna Charta" (Phila.: 1945), p. 117, who states John de Ferrers died in August, 1312 in Gascony, "probably of poison, at the age of 41 years." Collins, "Royal Ancestors...," states he is of Southhoe and Keyston, Hunts, and Bugbrooke, Northants, and served as Constable of the Army of Scotland and Seneschal of Gascony. See http://www.geneajourney.com/ferrers.html which states that John was "of Chartley, co. Stafford, Southoe and Keyston, co. Hunts, and Bugbrooke, co. Northants, the King took his homage on 21 Nov 1293, whereupon he had livery of those lands as heir of his grandmother, Margaret, Countess of Derby. On 13 Sep 1294, he had license to demise to Robert de Bures the manor of Chartley, for the life of said Robert. He was the principal supporter of the Earls of Hereford and Norfolk in their quarrel with the King in 1297. His attempts to regain the lands which had been forfeited by his father's rebellion, which included a payment for such to the Earl of Lancaster, did not meet with the King's approval and he was thus summoned to appear before the King's Court or suffer forfeiture of all his lands. He was summoned for military service from May 1297 to 28 May 1311, as well as to Parliament from 6 Feb 1298/99 to 19 Dec 1311. He was in the King's service in Scotland in 1298 and 1303, as well as Constable of the Army of Scotland in 1306. On 24 Jun 1311/12, he was appointed Seneschal of Gascony. About this time, which was probably in Aug 1312, John de Ferrers died in Gascony, "of poison, it was said" at the age of 41. His widow married John de Bures, whom she predeceased." In a later passage, he specifies that 'des filles dou conte Henri estoit morte Marie qui estoit l'ains née', her death as well as that of her betrothed occurring before they reached the age of marriage. The text is unclear about the precise date of her death, but implies that it was before the death of her stepfather. Although she bore the same first name as her older half-sister, the two passages are unequivocal, especially the latter which is included in the chapter which follows the one which records the marriage of the older Marie with Jean de Brienne. Betrothed (1194) to Guy de Lusignan , son of Amaury de Lusignan Lord of Cyprus [later King of Cyprus and King of Jerusalem] & his first wife Echive of Ibelin (-[30 Mar 1206/5 Dec 1207). William of Tyre (Continuator) specifies that Guy and his brother Jean died before reaching the age of marriage. The text is unclear about the precise dates of their death, but clearly their brother Hugues was the only surviving son when their father died."

[20049] Joseph was a soldier in the War for Independence. For his family, see "The History of Martha's Vineyard...," Charles E. Banks (Edgartown, MA: Dukes Co. Historical Society, 1966), Vol. 3, p. 258. They descend from Israel Luce who emigrated from Wales with his son Henry, b. 1645, who settled at Scituate, MA about 1666 and moving to Martha's Vineyard about 1670. Henry m. Remember Litchfield of Barnstable, MA (b. ca. 1644, living in Nov. 1808 when she signed legal documents). Henry's son Robert is the father of Joseph Luce (1726-1808). NSDAR 141575; NSDAC 14376. NEHGR 25:261 lists his as "Serj." in the 10th company of the 7th Massachusetts Regiment mobilized for the Battle of Louisbourg (1745). "The American Descendants of Henry Luce of Martha's Vineyard, 1640-1985," Mrs. James McCourt (9501 SE 13th St, Vancouver, WA 98664), 1985, p. 47, reports "res. Tisbury; served in Sea Coast Def. 1776 . . . m. 4 Apr 1748 Jedidah Claghorn . . . (Jedidah's "Mayflower" connection: 'NEHGR' 69 - 1915, pp. 242-243.)."
