John and Frances married in St. Mary's Parish, Taunton. They were in Mass. in 1629 per Plymouth Colony Records. John was Sheriff of the Colony. They were at Dorchester, 1633-40; church member, 1635; freeman; proprietor, 1636; planter; constable. He was at Scituate, 1640-54; among holdings was108 acres near mouth of North River on the Marshfield side; constable and sheriff. He was at Lancaster, 1654-62; pioneer settler and held largest "estate" of land. (NEGHR 111:173) See "Colonial Americans of Royal and Noble Descent," Patricia Ann Scherzinger (Bowie, MD: Heritage Books, 1996), p. 517.

"The Remingtons of Utah," by Ward Roylance (privately published, 1960): JOHN WHITCOMB of Lancaster, John was born in (Dorsetshire?) England about 1588, a son possibly of John Whitcomb of London and his wife Anne, daughter of John Harper of the East India Company. He was married in Taunton, Somerset, on 26 November 1623, to FRANCES COGGAN, daughter of Henry.

Apparently well-educated, John is supposed to have settled in Dorchester, Mass. by 1633; but this seems unusual, since his daughter Joan was baptized in Taunton, England in 1634. (It may be that his wife followed him to New England by a year or two,) John removed to Scituate by 1640, where he had 108 acres, There he remained for some 12 or 14 years, during which he held the position of constable and became a freeman in 1652. Also in 1652 he became interested in the new plantation of Lancaster, but it is probable that he did not actually settle there until 1654, when he conveyed the last of his land in Scituate. John is regarded as one of the founders of Lancaster even though he was not one of the very first to take up actual residence there.

John Whitcomb was involved in some rather humorous litigation in 1657 and 1658 with his neighbor, Stephen Gates. It seems that three of his sons (including Josiah and Job) had accidentally or purposely killed some swine belonging to Gates; and in the belief that it was the honorable thing to do John had given Gates his note promising payment. The next year, however, in December of 1658, "being weak and aged," John petitioned the General Court to excuse him from making payment--stating that Gates had misrepresented the affair, or words to that effect. But the Court adjudged that he must honor his note, inasmuch as he had made
it.

From: Dennis J. Cunniff [dcunniff@bellatlantic.net] 11 June 1998:

The William Whitcomb/Blanche Sturry couple are said to be ancestors of John Whitcomb (who married Ann Harper) who were until recently believed to be ancestors of John Whitcomb who married Frances Cogan. But some recent research suggests that John Whitcomb's parents were Thomas Whitcomb and Johanna Pope rather than John Whitcomb and Ann Harper (descendants of William Whitcomb and Blanche Sturry).

I am including some files to show my descent from our common ancestors and also a transcription of what I believe to be the current state of the Whitcomb information. Thomas Whetcombe & Johanna Pope m. abt Mar 1584/1585

Cutter, William Richard, Genealogical and Personal Memoirs relating to the families of Boston and Eastern MA, Clearfield Co., New York, 1908. (4 volumes), p. 961 ff.

John Whitcomb, first of the Whitcomb family to settle permanently in this country, appeared in Dorchester as early as 1633. He joined the church there in 1635. It had been supposed for a long time that he was the son of Symon Whitcomb, or Whetcomb, who was one of the original patentees of the old MA Bay Colony, but the will of Symon's father shows this belief absolutely wrong. He may have been the brother.

The belief has gained ground among those who have studied the records that the emigrant, John Whitcomb, was the second son of John and Anne (Harper) Whitcomb, of London. John Harper, father of Anne, was a member of the East India Company, June 16, 1620, and it is recorded that he gave his daughter Anne a share in Virginia, viz: America. In 1640 John Whitcomb removed to Scituate, MA, where he already owned land. He was made constable, and was on the list of those able to bear arms, in 1643. He was admitted a freeman June 3, 1652. In 1654 he removed to Lancaster, MA, where in 1652, when the town was laid out, he had invested some money. He and his son, John, Jr., were among the founders of Lancaster. After some thirty years of life in the colony he died September 24, 1662, aged about seventy-four years. He was buried in the old graveyard at Lancaster, but there is no stone. He married, in England, Frances -------, and there his elder children were born. He had certainly five sons, perhaps six, and three daughters. He died intestate, and the widow and children mutually agreed upon a division of the estate, which was approved by the court. His widow made her will May 12, 1671, and died at Lancaster, May 17, 1671. Her youngest daughter Mary was executrix. Children: 1. Catherine, married, 1644, Rodolphus Ellmes, of Scituate; resided there; nine children. 2. James, born in England, settled in Boston; father removed to Scituate; note mentioned in his father's will; owned a place of five acres opposite the Boston common; died in Boston, November 23, 1686; married twice, Rebecca and Elizabeth; ten children. 3. John, born in England, may have been the oldest son; was most closely associated with his father. (Their signatures are found together in several places--once as early as 1652 when they both signed the town covenant of Lancaster, and in 1654-1655 both are among the twenty families named in a petition for a township drawn up by John Whitcomb, Sr.); married May 19, 1669, or January 16, 1671, probably the latter date, which is given by Savage; died April 7, 1683, accidentally drowned, leaving wife Mary and two daughters. 4. Robert, remained at Scituate when his father went to Lancaster; married, 1660, by a Quaker preacher, in Rhode Island, Mary, daughter of General James Cudworth, but this marriage being pronounced unlawful by the Puritan authorities he was remarried March 9, 1660; his wife was born July 23, 1637; the preacher was Henry Hobson, of Rhode Island. Robert Whitcomb was the first to settle at "Beechwood" in the Beeches, the family place at Scituate, where several generations of Whitcombs have lived; seven children. 5. Jonathan, was on the jury at the inquest upon the death of Richard Mann, of Scituate, February 16, 1655, with his brother-in-law, Robert Ellmes, John Hoar and others. He removed from Scituate to Lancaster; married, November 25, 1667, Hannah ------; died in February, 1690. His widow Hannah was killed by the Indians July 18, 1692, at the house of Peter Joslin in Lancaster. He had eleven children. 6. Abigail. 7. Job, was a surveyor at Lancaster; married, May 19, 1669, Mary -------, after King Philip's war he settled in Wethersfield, Connecticut; died 1683; had six children. 8. Josiah, born in 1638, mentioned below. 9. Mary, married John Moore, son of John and Anna (Smith) Moore, August 13, 1663.

Although one sometimes sees his parents sometimes given as John Whitcomb and Anna Harper, research published in 1997 (The Mary & John Clearing House, Search for the Passengers of the Mary & John 1630, vol. 26, p. 61-73) gives ancestry as recorded here (Thomas & Johanna (Pope) Whetcombe).

The often postulated relationship of John Whitcomb/Anne Harper as parents of John Whitcomb who married Frances Cogan is further thrown into question by marriage records in England.

WHITCOMB. JOHN ( -1662) of Lancaster. MA - In the Search series, volume 18, pp. 150-152, John Whitcomb of Taunton, Somerset is listed but not his ancestry. Robin Bush has now established his origins from the manorial records of Taunton Late Priory. This manor covered the area immediately to the north-east of the old borough of Taunton which lay within the parish of Taunton St. James, at which church four of John Whitcombe's children were baptised. This work has established that John's parents were Thomas Whetcombe & Johanna Pope and John's ancestry can now be traced back to the brothers and sister of his father. Also, John's mother's ancestry has been traced back to her grandfather, John Pope of Taunton.

The following entry was found in the records of the Dean of Salisbury Cathedral at Wiltshire Record Office: 30 July 1629. Evidence given by Thomas Whetcombe of Sherborne, Dorset, "linnen draper", where he had lived for 20 years or more, aged 45 (born c. 1583-4), born Ta(u)nton. (Wiltshire Record Office, Dean of Sarum, Deposition Book, ref. D5/22/10)

This provides the necessary proof that the Taunton and Sherbome Whetcombes. detailed above. were indeed derived from the same family. A search of the parish registers for the two Taunton parishes up to 1640 revealed the following entries. The burial of Christian Whetcombe in 1619 completes the link between the Taunton and Sherborne families, since she is clearly the daughter of Thomas Whetcombe mentioned in the will of John Whetcombe of Sherborne (died 1598),
