[46508] The unverified file LJLT-7TF in familysearch.org in 2020 includes this note: "Salem Witch Trial Victim. Convicted of practicing witchcraft and hanged during the Salem Witch Trials. Twenty benches stand in a Memorial for the victims, one for each who were actively put to death (not counting those who died in prison). She was born between 1643 & 1650 to Andrew & Faith (Ingalls) Allen of Andover MA. She married Thomas Carrier, aka Morgan, a recently arrived bondservant, 7 May 1664, when she was 7 months pregnant with her eldest child. She unsuccessfully nursed her father & brothers in the 1690 smalpox epedemic, and thereby became a land owner in her own right. Some believe that she was accused of witchcraft in Salem in 1692 because she was a niece of the Rev. Francis Dane of Andover. (Over one third of the Salem accused were related to him or his wife in some way.) Martha's trial was fully transcribed at the direction of Cotton Mather, who believed this case to represent the strongest case for the use of spectral evidence. The evidence he found persuasive was the testimony of Martha's 16-year old-son, Richard, and her 12-year-old daughter, Sarah, that she made them become witches to "haunt" others at her direction. However, John Proctor (who was hanged the same day as Martha) wrote the governor that he witnessed these children's torture in the jail where he was also imprisoned: they were reportedly tied neck to ankles (with a rope down their backs) and left that way until said what their interrogators wanted to hear. Salem erected a memorial in a downtown park for her and each other person hung (or, in one case, pressed to death) during the hysteria. The 'witches' hanged at Salem were dumped in a nearby ravine."

"Mary Frances Boydstun crossed the plains to the Willamette Valley with her parents in 1853, being then only 14 years old. She married Cornelius Gooding White when she was just past 16 years old. He crossed the plains to Oregon in 1852 in an emigrant train. They were married in Linn County, Oregon in 1855 and settled first in Umatilla County, Oregon, but later sold their place and bought 200 acres near Crescent City on the Smith River in California, which was stocked with cattle and hogs.
"A heavy rain caused the river to flood and their log cabin was flooded knee deep so they went to the new barn for shelter and were there for 3 days and nights without food. Their cows and hogs were swept away into the sea, but an Indian came in a canoe and rescued them, throwing a paddle to Cornelius to grab so he could pull the canoe to the barn for them to get into it.
"They lived at Smith River until 1862 and then moved back to Umatilla County, Oregon, where in 1870 they sold their ranch and took a squatter's claim on Butter Creek, about 15 miles from Pilot Rock, Oregon. A neighbor made a trip to the Palouse River country in Washington and came back with fine reports of the advantages there, so the White family made the trip also, to see for themselves. They liked so much they stayed and were among the pioneer families of Colfax, Washington. Cornelius White died in 1891 and Mary Frances died September 17, 1922."

The earldom was then bestowed upon Sir John Stewart, of Bonkil, who was descended from the second son of Alexander, High Steward of Scotland. On the death of Thomas, third Earl of Angus of the Stewart family, in 1377, without issue, the title devolved on his sister, Lady Margaret. She resigned it in 1389, and King Robert II. then granted the earldom of Angus, with the lordships of Abernethy, in Perthshire, and of Bonkil, in Berwickshire, to George Douglas, her illegitimate son by William, the first Earl of Douglas, her brother-in-law. He married Pheobe Cooper in 1639 in Hartford, Connecticut. They had one child during their marriage. He died on November 23, 1686, in Plymouth, Massachusetts, at the age of 74. Pheobe Cooper was born in 1628 in Plymouth, Massachusetts. . . . She died on May 22, 1663, in Massachusetts at the age of 35. This line requires documentation.
