He married Mary Ellen Sarvis in 1861 in Livingston, Illinois. They had six children in 12 years. He died on July 17, 1918, in Goodland, Kansas, having lived a long life of 82 years."

Schwalm, 81, a former resident of Valley View, died Thursday evening at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. George Burness, 120 College Ave., Elmira, N.Y. Since the death of her husband. Charles W. Schwalm, she had been residing with her daughter and family. Mrs. Schwalm was a daughter of the late Ellsworth and Mary (Knorr) Stiely. She was a member of St Andrew's Evangelical United Brethren Church, Valley View.
