[16956] Parents of Reuben Gray , Sr. are from Snow, Walter H., "Brooksville, Maine..." (Downeast Graphics, 1976), p. 12, who also provides Reuben's ten children. A more complete treatment of this family is in "Penobscot Pioneers," Philip Howard Gray (Camden: Penobscot Press, 1993), pp. 6-21. A Joshua Gray was at the reduction of the Louisburg fortress, and is probably our Joshua. Our Joshua r. Berwick, the Kennebec area of Lincoln county and then the Bagaduce area (Brooksville) of Hancock county. See also "The Descendants of Joshua Gray," Gray Family Genealogy Book Committee (Ellsworth, ME: Downeast Graphics and Printing, 2005). http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~drowles/gray/10000002.htm states "He died before Sep 22, 1790; when Joshua Snow, witness to the deed, said he was dead. He resided in that part of Sedgwick now a part of Brooksville, Maine." "The Scotch-Irish in America," Henry Jones Ford (Baltimore: Genealogica Publiushing Co., 2000), pp. 231-232: "Andrew and Reuben Gray, sons of the above-mentioned Joshua Gray, took part in the expeditions which Governor Pownall of Massachusetts fitted out in 1759 to capture from the French the mouth of the Penobscot River, and the Grays were in the guard ot twenty men who acocmpanied the Governor when he occupied an abandoned French fort and hoisted the Kings colors. The place is now known as Castine, on the east side of Penobscot Bay. A strong fort was erected and settlement began in this region, the two Gray brothers being among the first to take up land. Several other brothers followed them, and eventually their old father and mother joined them. The Grays are now in large numbers in the lower Penobscot country . . . ."
