[41307] Ancestry.com offers: "Abbott Name Meaning - English and Scottish: from Middle English abbott 'abbot' (Old English abbod) or Old French abet 'priest'. Both the Old English and the Old French term are derived from Late Latin abbas 'priest' (genitive abbatis), from Greek abbas, from Aramaic aba 'father'. This was an occupational name for someone employed in the household of or on the lands of an abbot, and perhaps also a nickname for a sanctimonious person thought to resemble an abbot. In the U.S. this name is also sometimes a translation of a cognate or equivalent European name, e.g. Italian Abate, Spanish Abad, or German Abt."

Ancestral File states he was of Watertown, MA, but "of Scituate" when he died. This family must be verified.
Find A Grave memorial 37101665 offers:
"Baptized Eastwell, Kent, 10 June 1610, son of Rev. John House. Shipcarpenter from London who came to Massachusetts Bay in 1634 (based on date of admission to Scituate church). First settled in Scituate; moved to Cambridge by 1642, Barnstable in 1645, & Scituate in 1646.
Married about April 1636 Elizabeth Hammond, daughter of WILLIAM HAMMOND {1631, Watertown}. She was presumably dead before 1 October 1661 (when her two eldest children were granted administration on their father's estate) and was certainly dead before 1 July 1662 (when her father called her "my daughter Elizabeth House deceased."
Rev. JOHN LOTHROP {1634, Scituate} had married in England as his first wife Hannah House, sister of Samuel House. A third House sibling, Pennina, married ROBERT LINNELL {1638, Scituate}. Samuel House and Pennina House had been as early as 1632 members of Lothrop's Separatist congregation in London. Because of his participation in these Separatist activities, Samuel House was imprisoned in 1632 in London, as a result of which he was interrogated at a Court of High Commision on 8 May 1632, during which he testified that "I have served the King both by sea & by land, and I had been at sea if this restraint had not been made upon me. My conversation I thank God none can tax." (Burrage confused this immigrant with another Separatist, Samuel How, a cobbler and preacher.)
In his will of 18 October 1643, "Thomas Howse of the parish of St Stephen in Coleman Street, London, a citizen and brownbaker," included bequests to "my brother Samuell Howse" and "my sister Pininna Lynnell." On 18 November 1645, "Samuel Howse of Barnstable" made a letter of attorney to "Hezekiah Usher of Boston to receive twenty pounds of the executor of Thomas [blank] given him by the last will of the said Thomas [blank]." On 20 July 1649, "Samuel Howse of Scituat shipwright" made a letter of attorney to "Tho[mas] Tarte of the same merchant ... to ask &c. of the executor &c. of the last will & testament of Thomas House late of Lond[on] watchmaker, all such legacies as due unto the children of the said appearer by virtue of the said last will." - Source: Anderson's Great Migration Study
