He was born Jan. 30, 1945, in Castine, the son of Ronald E. and Ethel (Herrick) Byard. Butch graduated from George Stevens Academy, Blue Hill, in 1963 and attended NMVTI in Presque Isle, studying auto mechanics. He worked for Dick Howard in Brooklin and later for Shepard Chevrolet and Genes Sales and Service in Stonington. Eventually, he achieved his dream of owning his own business, first running Byards Auto Works in Stonington and later L. Byard & Son in his own building in Sedgwick. He was a man of all trades and liked caring for the family farm. He was especially fond of tractors and loved checking the Uncle Henrys for ones to fix up and sell. He belonged to the Sedgwick Volunteer Fire Department and was always there for anyone who needed help. He cared for both of his parents in his home. He is survived by his wife, Saralyn Billings Byard; daughter, Miranda Byard; son, Matthew Byard; daughter-in-law, Kortnie; two granddaughters, Melanie and Leah Byard; sister, Sandra Byard Hill and husband, Dick; nieces, Allison Charles, Lisa Dauphinee, and Betsy Ladd and their husbands; grandnephews and grandnieces, Hazen Dauphinee, Nathaniel Ladd, Samantha Dauphinee, Amanda Ladd, Katherine Charles, and William Charles; sister-in-law, Noreen Dunham and husband, George; niece, Gale Boughman and husband; grandniece, Emma Boughman and grandnephew, Alex Boughman; nephew, Barry Dunham and wife; and grandniece, Harper Dunham. He was predeceased by his father in 1982, his mother in 2005; and infant brother in 1940."

She attended Penobscot schools and graduated from Clark High School. Becky had a strong work ethic. She started her career in healthcare as an X-Ray technician at Castine Hospital, later graduating at the top of her class from Central Maine Medical Center School of Nursing. She worked as a Registered Nurse at St. Joseph Hospital and the Director of Nursing at Island Nursing before retiring. Becky was an accomplished seamstress. She designed and created several heirloom quilts including a bi-centennial display of Penobscot landmarks. She enjoyed gardening and spent many hours in her green house, vegetable and flower gardens. Among her beautification projects was the creation and maintenance, for many years, of the window boxes and shrubbery around the Penobscot Town Hall. Becky was a member of the Penobscot Historical Society and donated the building, which is now 'the General Store.' In addition to her parents, Becky was predeceased by her husband, Ernest, brother, Robert Leach and sister, Esther Austin, nephew, Kerry Leach and nephew, Benjamin Austin. She is survived by daughters, Darlene Baut and husband, Harry of Nevada; Debby Brown and husband, Eric of Benton; sisters, Rose and husband, Halford Grindell of Penobscot; Margaret and husband, Norris Austin of Penobscot; Roberta Burbank of Bangor; brother-in-law, James Austin and sister-in-law, Nancy Leach. Becky leaves four grandchildren, Greg Smith and wife, Melisa of Nevada, Addie Buck and husband, Shawn of Clinton, Michael Brown and wife, Isabella of Massachusetts and Paige Brown of Northport. Becky also leaves six great-grandchildren, Jon, Henry, Noah, Lillian, Andrew and Julian. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews to include a special nephew, Jack."
