The Scribner Family, by Thomas Lee Scribner, posted on http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com in 2007, offers: "Our ancestor John Scriven was the son of Sir Thomas Scriven and Margaret Corbett of Shropshire, England. Though there is strong evidence to support this, researchers admit that it is impossible to provide absolute and conclusive proof of this claim.
"Thomas Scriven was the Lord of Frodesley Manor from 1631 to 1644. Thomas Scriven distinguished himself in the army of King Charles I during the English Civil Wars, and was knighted by the King on September 29, 1642. It has been said that a pair of leather gauntlets presented to him by the King were long treasured by his descendants. In the year of 1643, Sir Thomas Scriven served as a colonel. Sir Thomas Scriven passed away on January 21, 1644. He died as a result of injuries sustained in battle months earlier. Our ancestor John Scriven was the son of Sir Thomas Scriven and Margaret Corbett of Shropshire, England. "John Scriven, born on October 27, 1623 in Wem, England, is believed by most researchers to be the progenitor of the Maine and New Hampshire Scribner families of whom we are descendants. We believe that John Scriven arrived in this country on a ship coming from the island of Barbados. At this time there is no known record documenting which ship John traveled upon or the exact date of his arrival.
"We do know that John Scriven is first found mentioned here in America in the town records of Dover, New Hampshire, dated April 5, 1662, when he was accepted as a resident of that settlement. Later town records indicate that John was chosen to act as constable on July 26, 1664. Records also show that John was chosen for jury duty on two different occasions. John's occupation was that of a blacksmith.
"We also know that John was married to a woman by the name of Mary. There is no known record of Mary's maiden name or her actual dates of her birth and death. We know that she lived from about 1635 to 1695. There have been books published that suggested that Mary was the daughter of Edward Hilton of Dover, New Hampshire. Edward Hilton had two daughters, neither of whom was named Mary. One of the daughters, Susannah, married Christopher Palmer. The other daughter, Sobriety, married Henry Moulton. I am sure the debate about Mary's true identity will remain long into the future with a definitive answer remaining unknown. You can find information about Mary in the following source: 'Piscataqua Pioneers 1623-1675: Register of Members and Ancestors,' Dallas Wylie Prugh (1967), pp. 138-139.
"John and Mary had four children. Their names were John, Edward, Elizabeth and Thomas. The eldest son John, was born in Dover about the year 1657 and became a blacksmith. He married Elizabeth Cloyes, and they had nine children. Some of their descendants were among the first settlers in what is known now as Waterboro, Maine. The graves of some of their descendants may be found in the Scribner Cemetery, which is located on the Federal Road in Waterboro, Maine."
