[3161] In 1783 Michael inherited 150 acres in Berks Co. from his father. Michael bought the John Sharp tract south of Loysville, later known as the Ritter farm. He moved to Perry Co. in 1788. He and his neighbor Martin Bernheisel gave the land in Loysvile on which the Lutheran and Reformed Churches and the cemetery were built [see "The Perry Review, Vol. 30 - 2009" (Newport, PA: The Perry Historians), pp. 14-16]. Michael was on the building committee. The log church was 30 x 40 feet in size. Michael was confirmed in the Lutheran Church. He served with his brother George and his sister's husband, Andreas Dressler, in Capt. Smith's Co., 2nd Battalion, Berks Co. Militia, during the War for Independence (Andrew Loy reports via email 5/99: "found reference to his service in the 3rd Penn. Rifle Rgt. durring the war, I believe Capt. Alexander DeHearts' company, but the information is in one of the volumes of the Penn. State Archives. The reference does mention that he participated in the Battle of Long Island in August of 1776."). The town was originally called 'Andesville' and was renamed in his honor in 1848. Find A Grave memorial 17041655 offers:
A blacksmith and gunsmith who came to Northampton in 1659. Served as town clerk, magistrate, selectman, deputy to the General Court and town treasurer.
Medad was born in Windsor, Hartford, Connecticut on August 19, 1638. He was the son of Eltweed and Mary Rockett Pomeroy. Medad learned to be a blacksmith and gunsmith so when he arrived at Northampton in 1659, he was welcomed by the authorities because of his skill and knowledge. He was granted a chest of tools and some land. He was made Freeman 31 May 1661, and settled at Northampton, Hampshire, Massachusetts. He was Selectman, first in 1675 and reelected 27 times; Deputy in 1677, and reelected six times through 1692; County Treasurer 1698 reelected a number of times until the year of his death. It appears that in some years he held not less than six important town offices at the same time. Medad's home-lot, granted by the town, was situated in the vicinity of Bridge St. Cemetery, but it is doubtful whether he ever occupied that lot. He bought an acre on Meeting-House Hill, where he resided until his death.
Medad married Experience Woodward in Northampton on November 21, 1661. They had at least nine children, all born in Northampton. Experience died fairly young, in 1686, at 43. She may have died in childbirth. Shortly after her death, Medad married Abigail Strong, the widow of a man named Chancy. They had one child, a son named Samuel. Abigail died in 1704, and Medad married Hannah Warriner. Medad died in Northampton on December 30, 1716. He is buried in the Bridge Street Cemetery in Northampton.
George Bodge "Soldiers in King Philip's War" p251. 253, and Hezikiah Sheldon's "History of Suffield" p 81. Medad Sr. served under Cpt Turner at the Falls Fight. He had a son Medad Jr (not listed in Find a Grave) who claimed the land granted his father for service. He also had a daughter Mary (1684-1773) who married Samuel Benton.
