He murdered Sir William Douglas in August 1353, without male issue. In August 1353 he slew his kinsman, William Douglas. He fought in the Battle of Poitiers on 19 September 1356, where he was wounded. Through his marriage, William Douglas, 1st Earl of Douglas gained the title of Earl of Mar before 13 November 1357. He was created 1st Earl of Douglas [Scotland] on 26 January 1357/58. He held the office of Warden of the Marches." "The Great Historic Families of Scotland", by James Taylor (London: J.S Virtue & Co., 1889), p. 49: "William Douglas, son of the Regent who fell at Halidon Hill, and nephew of the 'Good Sir James,' returned from France, where he had been bred to arms, soon after the battle of Neville's Cross and the captivity of the Scottish king, and, with the hereditary valour and energy of his house, succeeded in expelling the English from Douglasdale, and in the course of time from Ettrick Forest, Tweeddale, and Teviotdale. He was created Earl of Douglas by King David in 1357. He faithfully supported the cause of national independence, and even went so far as to unite with the Steward and the Earl of March in a formal bond to compel David to change his counsellors and to give up his intrigues for altering the succession to the crown in favour of one of the sons of the English king. He made a pilgrimage to the shrine of St. Thomas-à-Becket in the year 1363; but, unlike some others of the great Scottish barons, who made such pilgrimages a pretext for treasonable intrigues with the English Government, Douglas continued steadfast in his adherence to his country's cause, and resolutely opposed the attempts of the unworthy son of Robert Bruce to betray it to the enemy. On the accession of Robert II., the son of the Steward and Marjory Bruce, the Earl of Douglas unexpectedly put forth pretensions to the crown, but abandoned them on finding that they were not likely to meet with public support. As a reward for the promptitude of his submission, the King's eldest daughter was promised in marriage to his eldest son, and the Earl himself was appointed Justiciar of Scotland south of the Forth, and Warden of the East Marches. This great noble, one of the best of his race, died in 1384 at an advanced age. He was succeeded by his eldest son by his wife the Countess of Mar." Apparently Mary is daughter of John Witter. Sylvia (Mickybole@aol.com) wrote via email 6 Jan 2003: "Mary Witter Piper is a sister to my gg-grandfather, Abraham Witter. Abraham was married to a Catherine Ann Piper who was a niece to Daniel Piper. From a death notice found in a Fulton Co., PA newspaper we found that our Abraham came to Franklin Co., PA from Frederick Co., MD, with 'his father John Witter'. We have information from land/court records of Frederick Co., MD, that a John Witter came from Lancaster Co., PA to MD in the early 1780s and then to Franklin Co., PA in the early 1800s. We believe this to be the father of our Abraham and his sister Mary. But do not have POSITIVE documentation for this, i.e., birth records/will etc. Abraham was born 11 Jul 1786, the obit said Frederick Co., MD. We believe that our John Witter was married to a Catherine, but suspect he was married more than once. We also believe Christophel Witter/Weider/Widder, Sr., from Lancaster Co., PA, to be the father of John. (The Union Co., IN Witters are descended from this Christophel's son Christopher.)"
Betty Boddy Jantz posted in GenForum in June, 2003: "The way I see it, Mary Witter b. 26 Mar 1784 Frederick, MD was the daughter of John Witter b. abt 1762 and Hannah or Honour Washburn (dates unknown). She married Daniel Piper b. abt 1777 (son of Johann Adam Piper/Pfeiffer of Mainz, Germany. They had three boys: John A. Piper, Levi, and Abraham b. betwn 1803 - 1828. That's all I have on Mary. Mary's brother, Abraham Witter b. 11 Jul 1786 Fredericks Co, MD married Catherine Ann Piper b. 1805 m. 1923 and had 14 children...one being Adam Piper Witter b. 3 Feb 1829 Franklin Co, PA who married Hannah Tice. They had my great-grandfather, Abraham Howard Witter b. 01 Jul 1859 PA, who married Nancy Elmira Shriver b. 1864 married 1885 in Louisville, Kansas. My grandmother, Gertrude Nell Witter b. 6 Jun 1889 in LaClede(?), KS, was one of seven Witter/Shriver children. We know very little about her family and who her siblings married, etc. Gertrude Nell married my grandfather Aura Reinforth Boddy in 1917 Norton, Kansas where they raised very domesticated milk cows and farmed south of Norton, as well as owned property in downtown Littleton, Colorado." Betty Jantz wrote in GenForum in March, 2004: "I have seen John and Christina Roser Witter/Wieder born in PA, moved to Frederick County, MD (where Abraham and his older sister, Mary Piper/Pfeiffer) were born, then moved back to Amberson Valley, Fannett Twp, Franklin County, PA."
