Born on Oct. 18, 1923, in Mifflintown, Juniata County, he was a son of the late John R. and Edna (Staley) Shirk. His wife of more than 63 years, Betty R. (Wisehaupt) Shirk, whom he married on Feb. 14, 1947, survives. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Rick Shirk and wife Lisa, of Lancaster, Christopher Shirk and wife Carol, of Licking Creek; one daughter, Suzanne Rutledge and companion Stephen Briggs, of Mifflintown; one sister Lorraine McKnight, of the Locust Grove Retirement Village, Mifflin; and he leaves behind nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Preceding him in death were one granddaughter, Heather Shirk, two sisters, Elizabeth "Bib" Renninger, Esther Cisney, and three brothers, Paul "Mope" Shirk, Glenn Shirk, and J. Ray Shirk. Louis was a 1941 graduate of Juniata Joint High School, Mifflintown, a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, New Bloomfield, and a World War II United States Army Veteran. During the Battle of the Bulge, he was taken prisoner by German forces and remained a Prisoner of War until the end of the war. In earlier life, he worked at the Van Dyke Brick Works, after which he was a bookkeeper for Switzer Chevrolet Olds, Mifflintown, and in 1988, he retired as a bookkeeper from Zimmerman Truck Lines, Inc., Mifflintown. 'Lupe' enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and watching TV. He also enjoyed reading, especially about Abraham Lincoln, and was an avid Civil War buff, however, his greatest joy came from spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren."
