A veteran of World War I, he served 18 months overseas, was a member of the Penobscot Barracks 1065, veteran of World War 1; a 50-year member of the New Century Grange 356; Hancock County Pomona Grange; the Maine State Grange; and the Dedham Fire Department. He was self employed in farming. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Helen (Black) Gray; two daughters, Mrs. Laura Horr, and Mrs. Irene M. Gray, both of Dedham; three sons, Walter A. of Dedham, Loren R. of Bucksport, Ward W. of Orrington; three sisters, Mrs. Eva Bowden of Bangor, Mrs. Mavis Hopkins and Mrs. Mae Lane of Dedham; 20 grandchildren, several nieces and nephews."

He was born July 22, 1922 at Castine, the son of Charles and Arieanna (Hutchings) Wardwell. Mr. Wardwell was a graduate of Castine High School and had been employed at St. Regis Paper Co. for over 30 years, retiring in 1978. During his retirement he enjoyed lobster fishing, gardening and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was a member of the Trinitarian Parish Church of Castine, Hancock Lodge No. 4, AF & AM, Castine, and the Castine Grange No. 250. Survivors include his wife, Madge of Castine; two sons, Richard of New Baltimore, Mich., and Wallace, Jr of Penobscot; three daughters, Kathleen of Dorchester, N.H., Judith Ann of Brighton, Mich. and Patricia Mary of West Roxbury, Mass.; one grandson, Thomas Barkovic IV; four granddaughters, Stephanie and Terissa Wardwell and Ariana and Heather Wardwell; several nieces and nephews. Graveside funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday Sept. 11, 1992 at the Castine Cemetery."
