[43070] "Bangor Daily News Bangor, Maine]," 22 January 1923, p. 3: "Penobscot, Jan. 21 - The town was saddened by the death, Wednesday January 10, of its most prominent citizen and last Civil War soldier, Cyrus K. Bridges. Bridges, a man of keen intelligences, wonderful personality and strong moral powers, was born here March 9, 1834. He spent his early manhood here learning carpenter's trade. He did riot turn a deaf ear his country's call as is shown by his brilliant war record. He enlisted in August 1862, with his brother, and on August 21 he was mustered into the land forces of the North, at Bangor, Captain Bartlett. His sterling worth as a soldier was shown early, for he was made a third sargent before he left Bangor. This was soon followed by a promotion to orderly sargent, thence to second leiutenant. The esteem and respect in which he was held by his company is best shown by their presentation to him of a sash, belt and sword, when, having been commissioned a Frst Lieutenant, he was transferred to his new command. As a leader, he was supreme. He was an officer whose every thought was for the welfare of his men. He was not one who urged his men on from behind the lines, but it was Lieutenant Bridges who set the example for his men to follow. His activities in the war were many. His first engagement was at Spotsylvania, in which battle four hundred men were killed and wounded. From Spotsylvania his forces fought General Lee all the way to Petersburg where Lieutenant Bridges was wounded, July 16, 1864 he was then taken to Seminary Hospital, Georgetown, and then ordered home. Because of his wounds and an aggravated malady he was told to stay home, consequently he resigned his commission September 10, 1864. After a brief stay at home during which he recovered from his wounds, he went to work in the Kittery navy yard. It was while working here that he was taken into the Masonic society, in which he had always been a living example of its principles. He moved to Portland July 8, 1867. his first work was on the custom house and post office. He was foreman there for four years and a month. In the spring of 1873 he was appointed deputy marshal by Mayor George P. Wescott. formerly of Bluehill. He served three years in that cspaclty and was appointed marshal in 1876 by Mayor Moses M. Butler. As marshal he was a marked success, gunmen and thugs alike respecting his prowess. He served seven years as police head, a longer term than any other man up to that ttme. This statement itself speaks volumes for the ability of one who had already made an enviable record. Resigning his position in 1883, he returned to his native town where he built many houses and some churches, in this and the surrounding towns. His townsmen were not content to allow him to remain idle, and elected him to manage their affairs as first selectman. He served seven years and only his refusal to accept office prevented a longer term. As a young man be early expressed his belief in God's will by joining the church. He ever after lived the life he had chosen and had always been an active church worker. He was Penobscot's oldest citizen and holder of the Boston Post Cane. He is survived by his wife, who in his declining years in which his failing health has made him a constant care, has been constantly at his call. His every wish was anticipated by this faithful, loving companion who had spent nearly 66 years as his helpmate. Also a son. M. F. Bridges, who untiringly gave his aid toward his comfort, mourns the loss of a loving father, together with relatives and a host of friends. One of the season's worst storms prevented the flowers and attendance from filling the house. His interment was in the family lot off the old homestead, near his birthplace. Passed on to a far better world has the spirit of this great and good man whose memory will be perpetuated in his deeds of valor, kindliness and whole hearted manhood in the records of Penobscot's history." Cyrus r. Portland, Cumberland Co., ME in 1880 when he was city marshal there. See Find A Grave Memorial 76157379 which includes a photo of Lt. Cyrus K. Bridges.

[30808] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Wakeman offers: "John Wakeman (died 1549) was an English Benedictine, the last Abbot of Tewkesbury and first Bishop of Gloucester, both posts in the English county of Gloucestershire. In the earlier part of his life he went by the name John Wiche. He was the second son of William Wakeman of Drayton, Worcestershire. He supplicated in the name of John Wyche, for the degree of B.D. on 3 February 1511. On 19 March 1534 a congé d'élire was issued for the election of an abbot of the Benedictine monastery of Tewkesbury to replace Henry Beeley, deceased. On 27 April 1534 the royal assent was given to the election of John Wiche, late prior, as abbot. The temporalities were restored on 10 June. Wiche had secured his own appointment by intrigue, obtaining the interest of Sir William Kingston and of Thomas Cromwell, and by then persuading his brethren to refer the election to the king's pleasure. At the end of July 1535 both Cromwell and the king were staying at the monastery, and in October Wiche sent Cromwell a gelding and £5 to buy him a saddle. He supplied information to the government on the disaffection of one of his priors. On 9 January 1539 he surrendered his monastery, receiving an annuity of four hundred marks. He then seems to have taken the name Wakeman, by which he was afterwards known. On his nomination to the newly erected see of Gloucester in September 1541 this pension was vacated. The date of the letters patent for the erection of the bishopric is 3 September 1541. Wakeman was consecrated by Thomas Cranmer, Edmund Bonner, and Thomas Thirlby at Croydon in September 1541. In 1547 he attended the funeral of Henry VIII, and on 19 February of the same year assisted at the consecration of Arthur Bulkeley as bishop of Bangor. Wakeman must have had some pretensions to scholarship and theology. In 1542, when Cranmer was projecting a revision of the translation of the New Testament, he assigned the Revelation to Wakeman, with John Chambers, bishop of Peterborough, as his colleague. Wakeman died early in December 1549. His place of burial is Gloucester Cathedral. While abbot of Tewkesbury, Wakeman constructed a cadaver tomb cenotaph in Tewkesbury Abbey, on the north-east side of the high altar, which is still to be seen."
