[9798] "The Jefferson County Tribune [Oskaloosa, Kansas], 13 July 1917," p. 1: "Clarissa Briner was the oldest child of Daniel and Amanda Briner. She was born near Kirkville, in Mahasea County, Iowa, August 21, 1852. She resided there until the spring of 1857 when she came to Oskaloosa, Kansas, with her parents, arriving here June 10th. She lived with her parents until her marriage on April 17, 1884, to William H. Pottorf. To this union were born two daughters, Claire, who is a nurse in the Santa Fe Hospital in Topeka, and Mrs. Sadie Wilson of Dexter, Kansas. Having come to Kansas in the early days Mrs. Pottorf entered fully into the spirit of the times and in all civic life took the side of the righteous. She was received a full member into the Methodist Church by Rev. R. W. Horsfield, July, 16, 1871. She was an active and faithful member, always ready to do her part in any thing that pertained to the welfare of the church or the community. She had a christian's experience; lived her profession and truly her life was 'filled with good works.' Her last service to the public, though physically weakened, was to meet with the Red Cross committee the evening of June 26, and there as ever, cheerfully and loyally take her part. She has been in failing health for almost a year. But Tuesday evening July 3, she was taken critically ill. She passed away very peacefully about 8 o'clock Thursday evening July 5, age 64 years, 10 months 14 days. She is survived by her husband and two daughters, her step-daughter, Mrs Nora Warnoch, of Kansas City, and two brothers, Sylvester and George Briner of Oskaloosa, and one sister Mrs. Ida Walker of Stillwater, Okla. A host of friends join with these in mourning her departure. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church Saturday afternoon, conducted by Rev. T. A. Nichols, and interment was in the Pleasant View cemetery."
