[335] George was the first known tavern keeper in York, Maine. In 1640 he had property near what was later Sayward Hall. He and his wife had "domestic troubles," but his wife succeeded to his property at his demise and continued to run the tavern. A George Puddington arrived in America on the "Mary and John" from Tiverton, Devonshire, and settled in York, Maine per Banks' "Topograhical Dictionary of English Emigrants." A Robert Puddington arrived with him and went to Portsmouth, N.H. The George from Tiverton is son of Robert Puddington and Anne of Tiverton, Puddington Parish, Witheridge Hundred (Exeter), Devonshire; Robert the father died in 1630 in England. "Genealogy of Hezekiah Purrington [sic]..." (1975) states George and Mary sailed in the "Pied Cow" out of Portsmouth, England along with sons John and Elias during the first week of May "and arrived at Agamenticus two months later" - putting in at Cow Cove, Piscataqua Plantation. Patrick McDonald [PO Box 357, Round Corner, NSW 2158, Australia - patrick@mpx.com.au] offered in 2005 on http://awt.ancestry.com: "He was a clothier from Tiverton, Devon, England. His father was the owner of a mill which burned, bringing him into financial difficulties shortly before death. Law suits were part of inheritance of his son, and they may have been the reason for the emigration of the brothers -- George to Agamenticus (the old name for York, Maine) and Robert to Portsmouth, sometime before 1640, the year both are found on the records. In the will of Robert (their father), the house on Brampton St., Tiverton, England, was left to George. George Puddington's name first appears in list of alderman and as deputy to the Provincial Court. He was fined by the Provincial Court for being tipsy. He brought with him to Maine his wife and children. He purchased from Henry Simpson, in1640, the home lot where he settled andcarried on business as an innkeeper. "With a tavern license usually went license to sell liquor on the premises. First known tavernkeeper in York was George Puddington, who in 1640, was landlord of an inn situated near the location of the present Sayward Hall." After his death widow continued the business. The two islands on which the Portsmouth Navy Yard is built were in the earliest times known as Puddington's Island. It is thought that George Puddington, who was living in York as early as 1640, was the first one who dwelt on these lands. He was not an owner." See "The Pioneers of Maine and New Hamphsire, 1623-1660," Charles Henry Pope (Baltimore, MD: Clearfield Co., reprinted 2002), p. 168. "History of York, Maine," Banks, Charles Edward (Baltimore: Regional Publishing Co., 1967) Vol. I, pp. 100-104 provides an extended discussion of him and his family, and includes his will. An unverified file in World Family Tree, Vol. 25, Tree 2401states that George was b. in 1597 in Tiverton and lists eight children with wife Mary Pooke.
