A file in Ancestry.com in 2014 by Frank D. Chamberlain offers:
Immigrant William Chamberlain was born about 1620 in England. The exact whereabouts has not been determined. Currently the WCGS is funding an English Research program, using members of the Association of Genealogists and Record Agents (AGRA) to locate the birthplaces and parents of the five early New England immigrant Chamberlains. It was previously thought that William was born in Billericay, Essex County, and was the son of Francis and Agnes (Haiden) Chamberlain. AGRA Researcher Peter Nutt, however, discovered that Francis and Agnes had only one son and three daughters. As stated below, William appears to have two immigrant brothers. Without further information on William's origins, the best we can ascertain is that he probably was born in Essex County in the East Anglia section of England.
Comparisons of Y chromosome DNA analysis from several Chamberlains who have established their lineage back to the immigrants Thomas, Edmund as well as to William have pretty well established that the three were brothers. The Chamberlain researchers, Prentiss Glazier and George Walter Chamberlain, theorized that Thomas Chamberlain embarked for Virginia from Gravesend, Kent County, England on June 6, 1635 on the "Thomas and John." William followed Thomas in September 1635 at age 16 on the ship "Thomas."
All three brothers, Thomas, Edmund and William were documented to be in Massachusetts by 1647. William encumbered himself with a deed from Francis Smith dated October 30, 1647, for a home in Boston. He sold this home in 1648 and moved to Woburn, Massachusetts, where he purchased a home. Sometime in 1648 he married Rebecca Addington.
About three years later he sold the Woburn property and moved a short distance north to Billerica with his brothers. Care must be exercised in not confusing William of Billerica with Henry of Hingham's son William. It seems that they do overlap in time and place. Immigrant William bought farm property in Billerica in 1652 and lived there most of his life. After Rebecca died, he moved to Chelmsford.
William was able to read and write, an ability that was far from commonplace in his time. He was a signer of the "Petition to Form the Plantation of Billerica (1654)." This separated Billerica from Cambridge. The Petition was originally drafted to form Billericay, but the "y" was subsequently dropped. Since Billericay is a town in the County of Essex in England, it is often assumed that William was from Essex County. He served as a constable of Billerica for a time.
William married Rebecca Addington who was born in 1625 in Billerica, Massachusetts. Her parents were Isaac and Ann (Leverett) Addington. There are varied opinions and some controversy over whether Rebecca was a Shelly or an Addington. In Sarah Shelly's will, Rebecca Chamberlain was mentioned as a sister of Sarah Shelly, a spinster. Spinster in those days meant a woman without a husband, which would include a widow. Isaac Addington, Jr. was Sarah Shelly's brother; his parents were Isaac Addington and Ann Leveret, and therefore I believe strongly that Rebecca was the daughter of Isaac and Ann Addington.
[Editor's Note: For further discussion of William's wife's name and the possibility of an additional marriage please read the article, "Comments on CAA 1902 Annual Report," in Spring 2007 issue of the Chamberlain Key.]
William and Rebecca had 13 children, 10 boys and 3 girls. Their children were:
1. Timothy- b. August 13, 1649, in Woburn. Died young. 2. Isaac- b. October 1, 1650, in Woburn. Died July 20, 1681, in Billerica.
3. William- b. about 1652, in Woburn. Died January 20, 1734, in Lexington, Massachusetts.
4. John- b. January 22, 1653/54, in Billerica. Died April 1, 1712, in Billerica.
5. Sarah- b. May 20, 1655, in Billerica. Died January 17, 1735/36, in Billerica.
6. Jacob- b. January 18, 1656/57, in Billerica. Died November 7, 1721, in Newton, Massachusetts.
7. Thomas- b. February 20, 1659/60, in Billerica. Died before October 1724 in Newton, Massachusetts.
8. Edmund- b. July 15, 1660, in Billerica. Died after July 28, 1740, in Billerica.
9. Rebecca- b. February 25, 1662/63, in Billerica. Died after August 14, 1733.
10. Abraham- b. January 6, 1664/65, in Billerica. Died between 1728-1747 in Brookline, Massachusetts.
11. Ann- b. March 3, 1665/66, in Billerica. Died after February 2, 1685, in Billerica.
12. Clement- b. May 30, 1669, in Billerica. Died 1741 in Billerica. 13. Daniel- b. September 27, 1671, in Billerica. Died after November 22, 1725, in Billerica.
Rebecca died a victim of the infatuation of the time in Cambridge Prison on September 26, 1692. No documentation has in any way connected her to witchcraft, she could have been held as a material witness. However, according to Enders A. Robinson,1 "Rebecca, the wife of William Chamberlain, and John Durrant, both of Billerica, died in prison in Cambridge, where they were incarcerated for Witchcraft". I have tried to contact Dr. Robinson to find where he obtained his data, but of this date I have been unsuccessful. According to Robert Kinsman, the past president of the Billerica Historical Society, it is not known for certain that she was returned to Billerica. However if she was, she may have been buried in the South Burying Ground, now known as Old South Cemetery.
William died May 31, 1706, in Billerica at the age of 86. At the time of his death he was residing in Chelmsford, however the Billerica Vital Records to 1850 shows that he died in Billerica. Possibly he was visiting his children in Billerica at the time of his death. Most probably he was buried in the South Burying Ground, now known as the Old South Cemetery. Neither his nor Rebecca's plots have been found.
