[12031] Jean m. 23 July 1949 William James Gallagher (b. 6 Dec 1918, d. 16 Sept 1956). Jean and William died in California due to burns suffered in a furnace explosion in their home. They are buried beside her parents in Wooster, OH. "Mirror News [Los Angeles, California], 15 September 1956," p. 1: "A mysterious explosion and fire which destroyed the home of an airlines executive in Reseda killed his young wife and burned him critically early today. Mrs. Jean Gallagher, 33, of 7736 Balcom Ave. was dead in the hallway of her flame-swept home when firemen arrived. Her husband, William, 37, is in Northridge Hospital. He was rescued by Fireman Stanley Ripple, who crawled through. a window Into the flaming master bedroom and carried him out. E. J. Lane, who lives across the street at 7735 Balcom Ave., told investigators that an explosion preceded the fire at 4:45 a.m. Lane said he had seen the Gallaghers return home as he went to bed about 1:45 a.m. Lane arose three hours later for a drink of water, and was startled by a loud explosion across the street. Lane reported that "flames were shooting 10 feet in the air around the house right after the explosion." The interior of the ranch home was burned out. Firemen could not find the cause of the blaze immediately. Gallagher was so severely burned he could not give a coherent account of the fire. Firemen theorized that both were virtually overcome by smoke in the early stages of the blaze, and staggered out bed in a semi-stupor when the flames advanced into the bedroom. Gallagher was regional manager of Pacific Southwest Air Lines. He was transferred here from San Francisco two years ago, and was originally from New York. The Gallaghers had no children. Their collie dog perished in the fire. Its body was found near Mrs. Gallagher."
