He was born June 9, 1922, in Williamsburg, Ky., and has lived in Mansfield since 1938 moving from Cincinnati. Mr. Ball was a retired employee from Mansfield Products and a member of the American Legion Post 16, 25-year Club at the Mansfield Products and the American Association of Retired Persons. During World War II he served in the U.S. Army Air Force. Surviving are his wife, the former Dorothy Heichel; two sons, Gerald E. of Lucas and Thomas W. of Mansfield; four grandchildren; two brothers, Lewis A. and Estel H., both of Mansfield; three sisters, Mrs. John (Erma) Locke, Mrs. Jack (Viola) Stout and Mrs. Roy (Marie) Allen, all of Mansfield. He was preceded in death by one brother Homer Ball.

[29161] The unverified New Rice Family Tree in Ancestry.com in 2011 offers his ancestry and states Joseph and wife are buried in the Emanuel Lutheran and Reformed Churchyard in Saville Twp. "The News [Newport, Pennsylvania]," 12 March 1896, p. 3: "Saville, March 10 - Joseph Rice, an aged and respected citizen, passed away on Sunday afternoon, in his 88th year. He was an active member of the Reformed church for many years, but for the last ten years was unable to be present in his pew. He was a wagonmaker by trade and worked at it for many years. His remains are to be interred in the cemetery here Wednesday forenoon. The following children survive: Charles S. Absolom and Mrs. Sarah Rice, all of Saville; David, of Loysville; John of Wilkes-barre, and Mrs. Jennie Weibley, of Harrisburg. His wife died several years ago."

The land for the homestead was purchased from the Penn family.
