[57735] James is son of Maurice Clifford Patten (1903-1940) & Lillian Malinda Matters (1907-1990; m. 30 April 1927 in Ellsworth, Hancock Co., ME), "The Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]," 26 April 2024: "Ellsworth - James 'Jim' E. Patten Sr. died unexpectedly and peacefully on April 22, 2024, at a local hospital surrounded by family. Jim was born to Maurice and Lillian (Matters) Patten in Ellsworth, on April 30, 1936. Jim graduated from Ellsworth High School, class of 1954. Following graduation, Jim worked as a route salesman for J.J. Nissen Baking Company. Jim married his sweetheart, Carolyn 'Cookie' Dunbar on July 16, 1955, and settled in Bayside, to begin raising their family. They subsequently moved to the Bridge Hill neighborhood to raise their four children. Jim joined Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in 1965 as a sales representative. Cookie later joined Jim at Metropolitan in 1981, working as 'Mr. Met' and 'Mrs. Met' throughout the Hancock County community until their retirement in 1997. Upon retirement, Jim worked part-time for Jordan-Fernald Funeral Homes until 2020. Jim was an active member of the Ellsworth community, volunteering for multiple organizations. He was a Past President of the Ellsworth Jaycees. He was very active in Rotary International and served as President of the Ellsworth chapter as well as Chairman of the Rotary Blood Drive. Jim was also very active with Maine Coast Memorial Hospital, serving as a Trustee, Chairman of Developmental Activities, and a member of the Strategic Planning Committee. Jim, along with Cookie, were also members of the St. Joseph's Catholic Church parish, serving as members of the Parish Council. Both served as Eucharistic Ministers for St. Joseph's. Jim and Cookie also hosted a local radio show called Coastal Country Chatter from 1985-1987. Jim was also very active with many other organizations including the Ellsworth High School AFS program, Hancock County Mental Health Association, the Homestead Project, Everybody Eats, and Loaves and Fishes. Jim was always willing to lend a helping hand to any organization that asked. Jim and Cookie loved to travel upon retirement. They wintered for many years in Sedona, Arizona and Clearwater Beach, Florida, in addition to many vacations and cruises. Upon permanent relocation to Surry, Maine, they spent much of their time watching their great grandchildren playing sports, visiting Acadia National Park and Schoodic Point, and enjoying the beautiful scenery of Frenchman's Bay from their sun porch. Jim will be deeply missed by all who were touched by his kindness and generosity. Jim knew no strangers; only friends he had yet to meet. He treated each day like a blessing and 'couldn't wait to hop out of bed to see what this beautiful day had in store for me.' He was a man small in stature but enormous in character. He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 69 years, Cookie, who was the love of his life; his son, James 'Putt' Patten Jr. and wife, Pam, of Trenton; son, John Patten and wife, Barbara, of Eastbrook; son, Joseph Patten of Mount Vernon, NY; seven grandchildren, Sara, Tracey, Lyndsy, Mallory, Jason, Joshua, and Jaret; along with three great-grandchildren, Camryn, Mikey, Kindle, and Harrison; and many nieces and nephews throughout the country, as well as distant relatives in Prince Edward Island. He was predeceased by his parents; sister, Mary Guptill; brothers, Maurice 'Junior' Patten and Raymond Patten; his daughter, Jamie Compton; and granddaughter, Alison Moon; as well as many friends and relatives."
