[3882] Godfrey is represented in the legend of the Swan Knight - see Wolfram von Eschenbach's "Parzifal" and the somewhat different French "chanson de geste" (cf. "Lohengrin"). The House of Boulogne continues to use the swan in their heraldic device. Encyclopaedia Britannica, 1956, 14:337: "The house of Bouillon was not alone in claiming the knight as an ancestor, and the tradition probably originally belonged to the house of Cleves." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ardennes-Verdun_dynasty reports "The Ardennes-Verdun dynasty is used as a label on the dynasty centered on Verdun who dominated Lotharingia in the 11th century. The founder of the dynasty was Godfrey, known as the Captive. He was a son of Count Gozlin, brother of bishop Adalbero of Metz, and Uda, a daughter of Gerard, Count of Metz, and Uda of Saxony. Godfrey was the brother of Adalbero, Archbishop of Reims. Count Gozlin's parents were Wigeric, count palatine of Lotharingia, and Cunigunde, a granddaughter of Louis II of France." For his line see http://www.friesian.com/lorraine.htm. Cf. http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godefroy_II_de_Basse-Lotharingie.
