[50451] "Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]. 6 February 2010": "Robert 'Bob' Jewett Getchell Sr., 75, husband of the late Mavourneen (Orser) Getchell, passed away peacefully Feb. 4, 2010, surrounded by his family at a Bangor hospital. He was born June 15, 1934, in Caribou, the son of Russell and Maud (Jewett) Getchell. Robert served in the U.S. Navy, in Panama and Cuba, during the Korean War era. He was also assigned to the first crew aboard the newly commissioned USS Forrestal, 'Super-carrier.' He graduated in 1975 from the University of New Haven in Connecticut, with a Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice. He served as a law enforcement officer for more than 25 years. Bob is survived by a son, Robert Getchell Jr. and his wife, Joy, of Milford; a daughter, Maureen Gormley and her partner, Henry, of Sebec; five grandchildren, Sabrina (Gormley) Weston and her husband, Ryan, Brian and Kandi Gormley, Ryan and Lance Getchell; two great-grandchildren, Bailey and Teagan; and his loving partner of many years, Sally Mountain. Robert is also survived by four sisters, Alice Black, Joyce White and her husband, Ferd, Luella Snow and her husband, Chuck, and Augusta Pelkey and her husband, Philip; and two sisters-in-law, Ruth and Darlene Getchell. Robert was predeceased by two brothers, Howard and Russell; and one sister, Flora."

He was a military retiree who had served in the U.S. Marines, the Coast Guard, and the U.S. Army. The Marine service included 'boot camp' at San Diego in 1930; Pearl Harbor in 1931; the 'USS Tennessee,' a battleship, in 1932-33. He was discharged from Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, N.H. in 1934. He patrolled Portland harbor with the Coast Guard Reserve in 1943. The Army service involved induction in 1944; 'boot camp' at Fort Knox, Ky.; OCS and being commissioned; Fort Riley, Kan., training Mech. Cavalry; ETO and establishing the Constabulary; Russian Autobahn Blockage and Berlin Airlift; American buildup in Germany (USSR had 18 divisions; vs. U.S.'s scant 2); Korea; and retirement in 1961 at HQ, U.S. Second Army, Fort Meade, Md., as a major. Nellie Tyler Ross, dearly beloved wife of Hubert, passed away Dec. 1,1997. He always felt that winning her was the greatest achievement of his life. He will be buried with her in the Baring Cemetery."
