[29519] See http://www.angelfire.com/ny/chickened/crowellfamily.html (not verified) which states John is son of Yelverton Crowell and Elizabeth Hammond and reports "Yelverton Crowell married Elizabeth Hammond. He is found in the records of Yarmouth MA on Cape Cod as early as 1640. His will is dated 23 Dec 1681 and proved 8 Mar 1683/4. It is reported that he died "suddenly" 24 Oct 1683. Elizabeth died Nov 1703. Yelverton may be the son of John Crowell who died in Yarmouth MA 7 Jan 1673; married to Elishua (unknown). This early family is largely undocumented and reliability of information is suspect."

[45263] See Find A Grave memorial 10467218 for extensive information. George Jacob and Elizabeth settled first in Nexcopek Twp., Luzerne Co., PA and part of their large family are in the 1790 census there. "Jacob" went ahead to Allegheny Co., PA and in 1792 helped defend the frontier against Native Americans. In July,1796 he started to clear and plant his tract of land in Buffalo Twp., northeast of the Allegheny River, and actually settled on the 411 acres 7 April 1797. In 1802 he had the tract surveyed and discovered that it James McCoy had a warrant for the same land dated 23 February 1794. How this issue was resolved is not known, but Jacob was on the land or part of it until he died. Buffalo Twp. later became part of Sugar Creek Twp., Butler Co. Jacob's grave marker notes his service as a Private in the 4th Battalion of the PA Militia during the War for Independence. See "The Hepler Family History," Avis Hepler Morgan (Baltimore: Gateway Press, 1986). Irene Tunnell posted on the Internet in 2001: "Jacob and Elizabeth are buried at Wilson Cemetery in Fairview Township, Butler County, Pennsylvania. The graves are in the woods behind the larger White Oak Cemetery which is in Fairwiew Township Butler County. The township lines cut through the area between the White Oak cemetery and the Wilson cemetery. The county lines have changed over the years. They are now in what is considered Wilson but when they were buried it was White Oak, hence the confusion."

"Ancestral Roots..." (Balt., 1992) 55-25 gives Ralph as son of Fulk Paynel "of Dudley, co. Worcester, founder of Tickford Priory near Newport Pagnell, co. Buckingham, living 1130; m. possibly a dau. of William Fitz Ansculf, a Domesday tenant with lands in several counties, whose lands Fulk Paynel eventually acquired." 55-26, "Ralph Paynell, of Dudley, co. Worcester, one of the rebels against King Stephen in 1138, when he held the castle of Dudley against him, living 1141, d. by 1153; m. N. N., prob. dau. Robert de Ferrers, d. 1139, 1st Earl of Derby, by his wife, Hawise, dau. of Andre, d. 1139, Seigneur of Vitre in Brittany. Evidence of the identity of the wife of Ralph Paynel is her maritagium which consisted of the manor of Greenham, co. Berks (a Ferrers fee). Robert Brian Stewart's web site, http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~cousin/html/p133.htm offers: "Fulk Paynel of Dudley was not unlikely a younger brother of Ralph Paynell of Hooten. He was successor of William son of Ansculf, the Domesday tenant of lands in several counties, which included Dudley, Worcestershire, and Newport [Pagnell], Buckinghamshire, acquiring these lands by marriage with William's daughter. Also called Fulco Paganel. He was born circa 1093. He married N. N. of Dudley, daughter of Lord of Dudley William fitz Ansculf de Picquigny. He was was founder of Tickford Priory near Newport Pagnall in Buckinghamshire, England. He died after 1130." Stewart's web site also proposes Ralph's wife to be "the daughter of Robert I, 1st Earl of Derby and Hawise de Vitré. Evidence of this marriage to a daughter of Ferrers comes from her maritagium which consisted of the manor of Greenham, county Berkshire, a Ferrers fee." (ref. K.S.B.
