Abraham farmed his parents' farm at Falling Springs For family of Mary Ann Dunkelberger, see "The Dunkelberger Family in America," Shirley J. Turner (Tucson, AZ: 1980). They were members of Mt.Zion Lutheran Church, Landisburg. Abraham was a director and vice president of First National Bank of Bloomfield and a candidate for U. S. House of Representatives on the Democratic ticket in 1888 from the 14th District of PA. He expanded the Warm Springs Hotel and was a farmer. He was a director and large stockholder in the Perry Co. Railroad.
------------------------------
"The Perry County Democrat [New Bloomfield, Pennsylvania], 8 January 1919," p. 3: "Abraham Bower, of Falling Springs, one of the oldest and most highly respected citizens in the county, died suddenly at his home on last Wednesday night from a stroke of apoplexy. Mr. Bower, who had been in his usual good health, was evidently just in the act of getting into bed when he was stricken. He was found the next morning lying on his back across the bed. He was aged 85 years, 2 months and 21 days. Abraham Bower was born in Madison township, this county, October 11, 1833, on what was known as the Ulrich farm. He was the son of Joseph and Anna Mary (Arnold) Bower. He grew up on the farm and shortly after his father's death, which occurred when he was only 14 years old, he became manager of the farm. Five years later he bought out the other heirs and began farming for himself , which occupation he continued all his life. Mr. Bower was an enterprising citizen and did much good in his township. He was interested in the construction of the Perry County Railroad and was a large stockholder. He owned the Warm Springs, where some years ago he erected a large dwelling house and for several seasons succeeded in making it a popular summer resort. Mr. Bower was a staunch Democrat and was much interested in politics. He has served as auditor and school director for several years. In 188S he was nominated congressman on the Democratic ticket for the Fourteenth District of Pennsylvania, composed of Lebanon, Dauphin and Perry counties. Mr. Bower was a director in the First National Bank of this place and for a number of years has been vice president. At an early age Mr. Bower joined the Lutheran church and all his life remained a faithful member, holding various offices in the church. It can be truly said that this county has lost a good and useful citizen in the death of Mr. Bower. On February 22, 1855 he married Mary Ann, (daughter of Jeremiah and Susan (Bernheisel) Dunkleberger. To this union six children were born, four of whom survive, namely, Alice, Mrs. Samuel Snyder, Loysville; Annie, Mrs. John W. Kennedy, Harrisburg; David L., of New York, and Edgar T., of Centre township. Funeral services were held on Monday morning at 10 o'clock conducted by Rev. A. R. Longanecker. Burial was made in the Mt. Zion cemetery."

Reuben (Jr.) m. Sarah Goodwin Herrick, dau. of Andrew Herrick and Sarah Goodwin. See Amon A. Gray and Walter A. Snow, "The Gray Family of Hancock County, Maine" (2nd Edition, 1987), pp. 112ff. for his family. Reuben, the first child born among the new settlers east of the Penobscot, was born inside the old Fort Pentagoet, where his family occupied the Staples homestead erected therein ca. 1760 - see "The French at Pentagoet, 1635-1674," Alaric and Gretchen Faulkner (New Brunswick Museum, 1987), pp. 38-39. Reuben's father sold this lot to Aaron Banks in 1765. In 1850 he was residing with his son Andrew, and his age was 87
(1850 federal census in Brooksville). It is presumed he died there, near the "Indian Bar", Cape Rosier, Brooksville, ME. Reuben's grave is located on Route 175 in South Penobscot, Hancock County, Maine. Headed north toward Castine, the cemetery is on the right side of the road. The cemetery is across from a house with the address of 797 Southern Bay Road, and is a few hundred feet from another road, on the opposite side, called Stonehaven Road. The cemetery is small, maybe 100'x100', bordered on all sides by a small stone fence. The cemetery contains the burial of an American Revolutionary War veteran named: Reuben Gray Jr. (1762-1858); also buried there, his wife, Sarah H. Herrick (1766-1846). There is a bronze plaque on the stone which says: "Revolutionary War Patriot Reuben Gray Jr. (1762-1858) - Ramassoc Chapter DAR".

Sam m. (1) Mary Ann Pontius (or Paulus) who died 27 June 1868; he m. (2) Mary Stall, widow of his brother Johannes - she died 9 April 1869; he m. (3) Lydia Horner (her third marriage). As an adult he moved to Summit County, Ohio; as oldest child of Jacob's first wife he may have moved because of a step-mother and her children in Jacob's household. He is named in his father's will. Probably Jacob helped him purchase a farm and he therefore had no further inheritance. Jacob's estate file does show a note from Jacob to Sam, satisfied from the estate. Sam r. at Millheim in present-day Summit County, Ohio, operating a sawmill and clearing and selling farms. His history and that of his wife and family appear in "Sam Myers and Lydia Horner: Their Ancestors and Descendants," by Forrest D. Myers (Harrisburg, PA, 1979). The 21 July 1860 census of Springfield Twp. [Middlebury P. O.], Summit Co., OH lists him with wife Mary (age 50, b. in PA) and children Isaac (age 20, farm laborer), Levi (19), Joel (17), Harriet (13), Louise (11) and Almira (7).
"Sam's background" - added by patfroehlich
[Note: Lydia resided with her daughter in Ravenna, OH at the time of her death.] [ For the history of Middlebury, Springfield Twp., see http://www.springfieldtownship.us/history.html.]
The Ohio and Erie Canal, connecting Lake Erie at Cleveland with the Ohio River at Portsmouth, was constructed by the State of Ohio between 1825-32 to provide cheap transportation and to promote economic development. Sam was employed by the contrator of the section in his vicinity to hunt deer and perhaps other game to supply fresh meat to the workers' camp kitchen. Once he injured a buck which then ran toward him. To save himself from the angry buck, Sam quickly slipped behind a small tree as the buck charged, hit the tree and Sam's hand was impaled by an antler. Sam held on until the animal died. The mounted antler hangs in a descendant's home.
