"The Boydstun - Boydston Family," Gladys Boydsun Domonoske (3rd edition, 1979)(privately printed: Mrs. A. B. Domonoske, 207 E. 6th St., Davis, CA 95616) pp. 22-23: "Thomas Bollister 1656 - transported by Thomas Crump and Mr. Humphrey Vaulx - to James City, VA - early Virginia Imigrants - by Greer. Thomas Boylston being a carpenter evidently paid his transportation by working for the Valux family in Westmoreland Co., VA. where he married Elizabeth, the daughter of Robert and Elizabeth (Burwell) Vaulx.Robert Vaulx, Jr., brother of Elizabeth Vaulx, married Mary Foxhall, her first husband. Her second husband was Caleb Butler and they had a daughter, Jane, who married Augustine Washington. The wife of Thomas Boylstun was therefore an aunt by marriage to Jane Butler. After his marriage we find Thomas Boylston in Calvert Co., MD where on Oct. 12, 1656 he bought land in Talbot Co., MD on the Eastern Shore. Because of danger from the Indians, settlers did not cross over until 1661. Records show that Thomas Balleston was transported to the Eastern Shore 1661. Only land records of Thomas Boylston have been available until recently when 'Maryland Marriages 1634 - 1777' has been published. In 1665 Thomas Boylston moved from the plantation on the Choptank river to Nanticoke River in Dorchester Co., MD where he bought 300 ac. called Boylston's Neck on the west side of the nrothwest branch of Nanticoke Riv. 10 miles up the branch. The map shows that Boylston's Neck was formed by a sharp bend in the river just before it empties into Fishing Bay. Somerset Co., MD was just across the Nanticoke Riv. where most of the Boylston family marriage records were found. ...In 1668 Thomas Boylston sold Boylston's Neck to Mr. Lewis, but lived on a plantation nearby, called Piney Ridge where his family lived for two or three generations after he moved to Cecil Co., MD in 1676. Thomas Boylston was on the rent roll in Baltimore Co., MD 1673 - 100 ac. and in 1699 was on the tax list in that county." Op. cit., p. 24: "Thomas Boylston, Sr. bought land in Baltimore Co., MD on the Pataxuent River near his partner, Thomas How. This land is now in Howard Co. but at that time was in Baltimore Co. near present-day Scaggsville. Thomas and Elizabeth Boylston died about 1706-1719 as there are records of estate accounts at those dates."
Brian Gibson (brian@thewebber.com) in 2004 on Ancestry.com offered that Thomas Boydston was b. 1634 in Barrhead, Renfrewshire, Scotland and emmigrated to James City, Virginia from Scotland in 1656.
[A Thomas Boylston of Fenchurch St., London, emigrated in 1635 and settled in Watertown, MA - is he a relative? - see "Abraham . . .The Father of Us All: A Pratt Family History," Kenneth Charles Pratt (Oxford, CT: privately published, 1968), p. 25, which quotes Henry Bond's "Genealogies...of Watertown, Massacusetts": "It is evident from the County Records that Thomas Boylston was not a very exemplary husband or Christian, and that his friends in England had not full confidence in his prudence and discretion; as an agent was employed to purchase an estate for him in Watertown. It is not improbable that he has been a gay young gentleman of London, whose habits were not formed after the puritanical model, and not being a member of the church, he was never admitted Freeman. (In) April, 1650 Thomas Boylston (sued) Thomas Pratt, (in trust) for young Boylston and his children." Patty Rose gives a genealogy of THIS Massachusetts Boylston in her Web site at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~pattyrose/engel.]
