Joanne's obituary from Mueller's Greenlee Funeral Home in Pasco, WA:
Joann Yvonne Place Swarner passed away peacefully on Monday, March 30, 2015. Joann was born March 3, 1931 to Edward Milton Place and Lulu Almira Anderson Place in Bowman, North Dakota.
Joann was 5 years old when she and her family moved to Plummer, Idaho where she resided until she graduated from high school. Joann graduated from high school at the early age of 16, skipping two grades after excelling in her studies while still playing basketball and doing chores on the farm in the early morning and in the evening. Joann went on to attend the University of Idaho in Moscow where she was studying to be a lawyer. There she met fellow student, Dale Morris Swarner, the love of her life. Joann and Dale were married November 4, 1949 in Plummer, Idaho. When their children were born, Joann became a stay at home mom and managed the family finances.
Joann and Dale instilled in their own daughters the Christian values that were passed down from their parents and grandparents. Her strong faith sustained her in times of great personal peril for herself and Dale. His accident and subsequent physical challenges were accepted and treated as part of Gods plan for their lives. In the course of her life, she triumphed over three cancer diagnoses and treatments. God surely held them in His hands all the days of their lives.
Their marriage of 53 years was a solid rock of unconditional love, deep respect, and undying devotion to each other, always watching out for one another. They were each others best friend and confidant. Their relationship is a testimony of the very best in a marriage and gave all a great example to follow. As a mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, she gave the same devotion, love, and care. Life lessons she taught her family were to be sure of your facts, think before you speak, be honest but tactful, be truthful, be kind, be fair, and be considerate of others.
Joann was co-owner and the broker/office manager for Tri City Realty in Kennewick for many years. Joann was very highly regarded by her peers. She believed everyone should be able to express their opinion on a subject. Toward the end of the discussion, she would say, 'Logically speaking,' and then state her opinion and the reasons why she thought something should be done her way. The majority of the time, her recommendation was approved.
After retirement, Joann and Dale enjoyed driving to various destinations across the United States to see family, friends and meet with shipmates at the annual USS Thetis Bay reunions. Their mutual interest in family history and genealogy led to trips where they visited cousins for the first time and became close friends. They toured and took photos of churchyards, cemeteries, libraries, and locations where their ancestors had lived.
After Dales passing in 2002, Joann continued traveling with her family and friends. She visited Europe, Cancun, Hawaii, Southern California, Australia, Alabama and the Pacific Northwest. Last summer the first annual Place family reunion was celebrated at her brother Erlings ranch on the old Place family farm in Northern Idaho.
Going to yard sales and antiquing, Monday night dinners and quilting were favorite times. She made many quilts with love and skill over the years, including one for each of her great grandchildren, granddaughters, and daughters.
Joann was a long-time active member in the First Lutheran Church. She was also on the Board of Realtors, taught real estate at CBC, prepared taxes for clients and family members, was a member of the Red Hat Society, Soroptomists, and with Dale enjoyed square dancing in the early years of their marriage.
Joann is best remembered by her family for her unconditional love and welcoming acceptance of everyone into her home. Joann was strong, determined, organized, selfless and powerful in a quiet way, doing everything for everyone else. She was thankful for everything done or given to her and always, always remembered to say or send a card expressing her feelings of appreciation. It was common to see Joann with a cup of black coffee day and night. Joann loved the Tri-City Americans and was an Ams season ticket holder for 26 years. She enjoyed the Seahawks and all things football. Joann loved watching her grandkids and great grandchildren play sports and other school activities. Both shopping for and with the daughters, granddaughters, and great grandkids at Christmas was a great treat.
Joann loved family traditions, especially her Christmas tree, ornaments and gifts under the tree. Her Christmas tree had more ornaments on one branch than most Christmas trees have altogether. The Star Trek shuttle craft ornament was one of everyones favorite ornaments and was one of the first looked for each year. If someone came over for Christmas, Joann made sure they had a gift from her boxes of gifts for surprise visitors. She had a giving heart that has been passed down to her daughters and granddaughters. Another important family tradition was food. Every Thanksgiving and Christmas, her family knew homemade lefse, orange rolls and spritz cookies would be on the table. A spelling and grammar expert, she loved to write shorthand. On gift tags, Joann wrote in shorthand to remind herself what each gift was, much to the dismay of her family. Nobody could figure it out, but her daughters and granddaughters still tried.
Joann was deeply devoted to her family and didnt like to be the center of attention. She was strong, dedicated and very organized. She was an avid science fiction book reader and loved the Star Trek series.
While her granddaughters were growing up, she bought each of them a stuffed animal for Christmas, loving stuffed animals as much as they did. It was a very time consuming, important task because each new animal had to pass a cuddle test to make sure it was soft and huggable.
Joann is survived by her daughters and their husbands, Kathy and Jess Latham of Richland; Patti and Larry Cabaldon of Rancho Santa Margarita, CA; and Jan and Roger Ulmen of Kennewick. Joann has four granddaughters: Tara and Anson Smith of Richland; Michelle and Michael Stempson of Pasco; Melissa Ulmen and fiancé Jason Hilbert of Pasco; and Shanna Deranleau of West Richland. Her step grandchildren are Lauren, Christopher and Dylan Cabaldon. Joann was blessed with seven great grandchildren: Colin and Jesse Smith, Megan, McKenna, Marcus and McCauley Stempson and Blu Deranleau. Her nephew Mike Baker and wife Peggy and their daughters, Stephanie and Caleb Castleberry and Kimberly Baker, have become like granddaughters to her. All of her grandchildren and great grandchildren held a special place in her heart.
Joann is survived by her brother Erling Place and companion Gerri Lee of Plummer, Idaho; sisters and their husbands, Ruth and Bob Pierson, Helen and Ken Evans of Spokane, WA; brother-in-law George Swarner of Twin Falls, ID; sister-in-law Pearl Harshbarger of Russellville, AL. Joann is survived by numerous nephews and nieces including: Eric and Barbara Place, daughter Jenna; Kirstin Rew, husband Moose Duhaime, and son Kendall Rew; Paul Baker, daughter Brittney & Lawrence Middleton and their daughter Caitlyn, sons Joel and Kevin Baker; Shelley and Rich Kish, son Jason Kish and his son James and son Matthew and Brittany Kish; Vicky Green; Suzette and Rich Hamm and children Nicholle and Connor; David and Penny Swarner and children Curtis, Stephen, Ami and Angela; George and Sharon Swarner and children Joseph, Amelia and Olivia; Myra Sue and Robert Anderson, children Rebecca and Thomas, Lisa and Steve Gamble and children Joshua, Asia, Katie and China; Teresa Sandoval and children Joshua, James and Anthony; Tammy and Tim Reynolds and children Carmen, Christine and Justin; Todd Harshbarger and children Lacy and Lynnsey, Troy and Tanya Harshbarger and children Aron, Alyssa, Robert, Cassie and Kezlie, Timothy and Tammy Harshbarger and children Gary, Timothy and Amber.
