[57119] "The Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]," 4 May 2022: "Bucksport - Esther Louise Bowden passed away on April 30, 2022, following a recent decline in health, with family by her side. Over the past 20 years she had endured several cancer surgeries and treatments; always with a positive acceptance and the determination to enjoy life and remaining independent up until this past winter. Esther was born on July 14, 1935, in Harrington, Maine, daughter of Teresa and George Ames. At age 6, they moved to Bucksport, Maine, where she resided for the remainder of her life. Esther was a proud graduate of Bucksport High School, class of 1953. Her classmates remained special life-long friends. In July of that year, she married Eugene W. Bowden. For 58 years they raised a family and shared many special memories until his passing in 2011. Esther's primary focus was her family. She was a very devoted wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, and aunt. Esther was an expert seamstress making beautiful clothing and quilts. In the later years when smaller projects were easier to manage, she created everything from Christmas tree skirts to tooth fairy pillows. She was an excellent cook and looked forward to all the frequent family gatherings when she would cook entire meals or more recently cooking at least one item to be able to contribute. Esther was an active volunteer for school events and fundraising for her children and grandchildren, and along with Eugene, attended many of their grandchildren's sporting events. Esther and Eugene spent many years camping, initially in Maine and New Hampshire and through the Maritime Provinces of Canada. They soon discovered their love of Prince Edward Island and would camp at Twin Shores Camping Area in Darnley for the next 40 years; eventually considering this more of a summer home when Eugene retired. Esther continued to spend time there as her children supported her camping outings for 10 more years after Eugene passed away. Their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren cherish many fond memories of the time spent together there as a family. Eugene and Esther shared their love of The Island with friends becoming part of the family. Esther was loved and will be missed by her surviving children - Stephen Bowden and wife, Juanita, Mark Bowden and wife, Delores, Craig Bowden and wife, Corinne, and Jeanna Bjorn; grandchildren - Jamie and wife, Amie, Shane and wife, Ja'Nette, Trevor and wife, Chloe, Jared and wife, Krystle, Brittany and husband, Reno, Jack and wife, Liz, Clark and girlfriend, Sydney, Greg and girlfriend, Brittany, Chris and wife Lindsey, and Tyler; great-grandchildren - Paige, Peyton, Maisie, Alyx, Sadie, Jaden, Brenna, Ethan, Beckett, Gryffin, Aiden, Chancze, Greyson, Karson, Blair, Barron; brothers - Russell Ames and wife, Kathy; Robert Ames and wife, Lorre; sister-in-law, Doris Bowden; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends. In addition to her parents and husband, Eugene, Esther was predeceased by their infant son, Timothy; sister, Marguerite; brother, Arlo and Eugene's siblings - Wilfred Bowden, Leslie Bowden, Marguerite Eckert, and her husband, Philip."

[53740] "Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]," 26 October 2020: "Ellsworth - Walter L. Bunker, 93, beloved father and grandfather, passed away peacefully on October 23, 2020, with his daughters by his side. Walter was born in South Gouldsboro on March 20, 1927, the son of Fritz and Thelma Potter Bunker. He graduated from Winter Harbor High School. At the age of 17, he enlisted in the US Navy and proudly served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Walter was a lobster fisherman and later owned his own lobster pound and dealership. He married Karen Willey in 1952 and they raised their daughters in West Gouldsboro. Folks in the area would remember him as someone who was always willing to help someone in need - to lend a hand, a vehicle, or some financial assistance. Later in life, Walter left the lobster industry and entered the real estate field. With their children now grown, he and his wife moved to Ellsworth. He worked as an associate broker and while sales were not really his passion, he did enjoy the many families he met and helped to settle in the Ellsworth area. Walter began a long career of public service in the 1960s when elected to the State House of Representatives, where he served six terms. While in the Legislature, he served on the Marine Resources Committee and was House Chair for two terms. After his tenure in the legislature, he was elected to the Hancock County Commission where he served for five terms, several of those years as chair. Walter served on the Board of Trustees at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital for 18 years and at the time of his passing, was an honorary member of the Board of Trustees. He was a member and past Chair of Eastern Maine Development Corporation. After his retirement from the County Commission, Walter continued to work for the county as the Supervisor of the Unorganized Territories. He retired at the age of 84. Following the loss of his wife in 2013, Walter decided the family home was too big and moved to the Leonard Lake Senior Apartments. It was there he made many new friends and enjoyed daily chats with his neighbors. Pup, as his grandchildren affectionately called him, loved his family. He was the happiest when everyone gathered at his house for family birthday parties, holidays, and other celebrations. He was an amateur magician and performed magic tricks for his grandchildren and anyone else who was willing to be amazed. He delighted in having his camp at Abrams Pond as a gathering place for his family in the summer. And while he loved a good party, he also loved solitude and thinking. He could often be found reading his Bunker genealogy books, mulling over early US History, or processing memories from WWII. Walter was an avid vegetable gardener and generously shared his produce with family and neighbors. His sense of humor was his trademark. Even in the darkest of circumstances, he could find a way to weave in some levity. His surviving family members include his daughters, Pam LaHaye of Morrill and Kim Bunker-Hodgkins and her husband, Mike, of Trenton; grandchildren Matthew LaHaye and his wife Jennifer of Southwest Harbor, Kathryn Deetjen and her husband, Bobby of Morrill, and Molly Hodgkins and her partner, Ismael Thadal of China; great-grandchildren Carmen LaHaye, Noah Deetjen, Hannah Deetjen, and Winston LaHaye. He is also survived by one sister, Dorothy Dubowick of Scarborough, sister-in-law, and brother-in-law, Joan, and Jerry West of Virginia, sister-in-law, Jane Willey of Georgia, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Walter was preceded in death by his wife, Karen; three siblings, Paul Bunker, Irene Pilch, and Mary Millett; his son-in-law Richard LaHaye, Jr.; and one grandchild, Sophie Hodgkins."

[6091] Elizabeth Comyn m. a Gilbert de Umfraville, Earl of Angus, b. 1244, d. bef. Oct. 13, 1307, son of Gilbert de Umfraville and Maud, dau. of Malcolm, Earl of Angus - per "Ancestral Roots..." (Baltimore: Gen. Pub. Co., 1992), p. 186. http://www.thepeerage.com/p91.htm reports "Gilbert de Umfreville, 8th Earl of Angus was born circa 1244. He was the son of Gilbert de Umfreville and Maud, Countess of Angus. He married Elizabeth Comyn, daughter of Alexander Comyn, 6th Earl of Buchan and Elizabeth de Quincy. He died before 13 October 1307. In 1265 he joined the uprising of the Barons against the King. He succeeded to the title of 8th Earl of Angus [S., c. 1115] circa June 1267. In 1281 he was one of the Nobles who swore to ratify the marriage of Margaret of Scotland to Eric, King of Norway. He gained the title of 1st Earl of Angus [England] on 28 June 1283. He held the office of Governor of Dundee, Forfar Castle and Angus in 1291. In 1291 he refused to surrender Angus to England. He was created 1st Lord Umfreville [England] on 24 June 1295." Cf. http://www.electricscotland.com/webclans/families/angus_douglases.htm which reports: "The earldom passed in 1243 to Gilbert de Umfraville, Lord of Redesdale, Prudhoe, and Harbottle in Northumberland, by his marriage to the heiress, daughter of the fifth earl of the original family. His son by the countess, who bore the same name, was governor of the castles of Dundee and Forfar, when the Regent in 1291 agreed to surrender the kingdom and its fortresses to Edward I. The conduct of Gilbert de Umfraville in this hour of trial presented a prudent contrast to the unpatriotic spirit which his brother barons displayed. He declared that, having received his castles in charge from the Scottish nation, he would not surrender them to the King of England without an obligation to indemnify him from Edward and all the claimants for the Crown. To remove his objections a letter of indemnity was signed by Edward, by the competitors, and by the guardians. On receiving this document Gilbert delivered up Dundee and Forfar to the English king. He afterwards, however, deserted the patriotic cause, and treacherously went over to the side of Edward, along with the Earl of Dunbar, immediately before the battle of Falkirk in 1298. The information which these two nobles conveyed to the English King rescued his army from a position of imminent peril. He died in 1307."
