His parentage is confirmed by the charter dated [21 Mar 1076/24 Jan 1077] under which 'Hugo…post decessum Rotberti ducis' and which specifies that Robert was 'patris Heinrici genitoris nostri'. He succeeded his grandfather in 1076 as Hugues I Duke of Burgundy, although the former intended Hugues's uncle Robert de Bourgogne as his successor. Hugues succeeded in expelling Robert, along with his younger brother Simon, from Burgundy. 'Hugo Burgundionum dux' made a donation to Cluny dated 19 Feb 1078, subscribed by 'Oddonis fratris eius, Rotberti alterius fratris eius. Duke Hugues left for Spain in [1078/79] to fight the Moors, helping Sancho I King of Aragon to take the kingdom of Navarre. John was living in 1368 as he appears as a witness to a deed April 20 the 41st year of King Edward the Third, but he must have died soon after, as in a deed dated 11th of Jan. in the 42nd year of Edward the Third, Humphrey de Bohun, Earl of Essex, Hereford and Northampton, Constable of England, at the request of his dear and well beloved John Knyvet, discharged Dame Margaret Barenton, wife of the late Sir John Barenton, for her life, from all services and customs due from the tenements she held in Hatfield, excepting quit rents, with an acknowledgement of services due, and the care of the fence round his park. John had two sons, John and Edmund, the latter possessed the Manors of Gravely, Letchworth and Cheresfield together with the parkership of the park at Weston near Baldock, and other lands there, all in Hertfordshire, and which had been the property of his mother Margaret and settled after her death on her younger children.
