"The Ellsworth American [Ellsworth, Maine], 3 February 2015": "Penobscot - Carolyn Blodgett, a well-loved mom, Nannie, great-Nannie and friend, died on Sunday, Feb. 1, 2015, surrounded by her loving family and wrapped in the warmth of the love and good wishes expressed by her many, many friends. Carolyn was born at the Mitchell House in Penobscot, Maine, on Jan. 17, 1928, the daughter of Merle J. and Marie (Mitchell) Leach. After Merles death in 1930, Marie married Carl Bridges, who became Carolyns loving stepfather. Carolyn spent her early years in Penobscot and fondly recalled the many adventures and fun times she had with the gang from 'the cove.' She started high school in Gorham, but returned to Penobscot to graduate from Clark High School in 1945. She went on to attend Gorham Teachers College, leaving after two years to marry the man who had earlier caught her eye during a baseball game between the rival Penobscot and Brooksville teams, Donald Blodgett, who was the pitcher for the Brooksville team. They were married on June 22, 1947, at the South Penobscot Baptist Church. They raised their family of five children living 'over the store' - Blodgetts General Store - a business they owned and operated for many years. As her children grew, Carolyn went back to college to finish her degree, attending the University of Maine at Orono. She commuted from Penobscot to Orono in all types of weather to complete her bachelors degree in 1969, one year before her oldest son, Michael, was born. She continued her education by earning her masters degree, majoring in reading and special education. Carolyn taught for many years at Brooksville Elementary School, retiring in 1987. After her retirement, Carolyn remained active by volunteering her time at the Penobscot Nursing Home and the Penobscot Elementary School. Throughout her life, Carolyn was a civic-minded and involved woman. She was an active member and 'muffin baker' at the Penobscot Methodist Church; member and past president of the Hancock County Retired Teachers; member and past Master of the Castine Grange; member of the Hancock County Pomona Grange; past secretary of the Retired Merchant Marine Association of Maine; past matron and 65-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star; member and docent of the Penobscot Historical Society; and a member of the Maine and National Education Associations.

Children of the third marriage are listed: Luarina Stewart (b. 26 Dec 1866, d. 23 Oct 1868), Clara Elizabeth Stewart (b. 26 Feb 1870), Alonzo Daniel Stewart (b. 26 Feb 1870 - "5 minutes after Clara Elizabeth") and John Henry Stewart (b. 11 Feb 1872). He was a boat pilot who moved from somewhere in MS/LA to what is now Wakulla Co., Florida and the port of St. Marks around 1850. His first wife was named Sarah M. _____ from Wittenburg Germany. Their children were: John Charles Stewart b. 1850; William J. Stewart b. 185; Henry H. Stewart b. 1852; George Stewart b. 1854; Holly A. Stewart b. 1859. After Mary died, William married Sarah Elizabeth DeMilt (New Orleans, LA) in 1863. Their children were: Laurine Stewart b. 1865; Lilla Stewart b. 1867; Alonzo Daniel Stewart b. 1870 (twin of Clara); Clara Elizabeth Stewart b. 1870; John Henry Stewart b. 1872. William J. and Sarah Elizabeth both died from yellow fever in 1873. He served in the Civil War in the 5th Florida Infantry company A in 1860. Census records show the birthplace of William J. Stewart variously as LA, MS and PA. I have been unable to discover who William J. Stewart's parents were and where specifically he was from originally. His middle name was probably John because there are several William John and John William names in the family later on. Based on family naming conventions his father & grandfather many have beem named Charles or John. Based on the first names he may possibly be associated with the Stewarts around Greene Co., PA and Stewartstown, WV. I have photocopies of the old Stewart family bible that shows the first wife's name as Sarah and where she was born. In addition, the 1850 and 1860 US Census records for Wakulla county show her as Sarah there too. Below are the relevant sections and you can also see George listed in the 1860 census.
A very interesting account of Sarah Elizabeth DeMilt's brother is "The life, travels and adventures of an American wanderer: a truthful narrative of events in the life of Alonzo P. De Milt...," Franklyn Y Fitch (NY: John W. Lowell, 1883) which states concerning her husband (p. 227): "William J. Stewart, a descendant of Commodore Stewart of 'Old Ironsides' and revolutionary fame." [The only known child of Commodore Charles Stewart ("Old Ironsides") is daughter Delia Tudor Stewart.]

Perhaps Sarah's middle name was Mary and preferred to be called that? Either that or perhaps he was married to a Mary previously to Sarah M? Here is William J's military information from a file I pulled off of the Wakulla County Genealogy site (I got the census records there too). Unfortunately, it lists very little about him:

"In addition to the above information, I also have the US 1880 census which lists his children and it states that the father's state of birth is Pennsylvania. So I am very puzzled on that account. In fact, I'm very frustrated. LA, MS, PA? Which is it?"
In July, 2003 Stan Stewart offered via email: "I found the following information in one of my searches. The names and dates involved are awfully close to those in my family to be mere coincidence, perhaps. Many of the same names are repeated so perhaps these Stewarts are at least related in some way. Based on the fact that there was a William J. Stewart also born here in 1922 and that our William J. told his wife (or his wife's brother) that he was originally from PA, I'm beginning to have a theory about him. What if he was a bastard son of this particular Charles? If so, it might explain a lot. If would explain why he was evasive about his origins and his parents. It also might explain why there are no birth records on him anywhere. Maybe he left PA as soon as he could and never looked back for that reason? I never heard any inklings of anything like this from my father or his brothers but then it wouldn't be something to talk about, even within the family. In any case, given that he probably was from PA originally, this is the closest family match (dates and name-wise) that I've been able to come up with to date. I think it very interesting that the names that this particular William J. Stewart gave his children are matches in several cases to the ones mine gave his (George, William, John-Charles)"
