[38571] Donald's obituary in the Bangor Daily News: "Donald Chase Blodgett, 81, died peacefully, Aug. 10, 2000, surrounded by his loving family. He was born April 7, 1919, at Brooksville, the son of William and Edith (Hinckley) Blodgett. He graduated from Brooksville High School and Fort Trumbull Officers Training School in New London, Conn. with highest honors. He started yachting on the yacht "Nakhoda" in 1938, spending winters in Miami, Fla. and summers in Harbor Springs, Mich. He was a licensed pipe welder, working in both Bath and South Portland shipyards. Don was a World War II veteran of Merchant Marines, serving as chief mate on the "Aedenus Burke" and "Sturdy Beggar" in both Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and the Mediterranean Sea. After the war, he shipped on the "Del Rio", a combination passenger/cargo ship from New Orleans to South America. He loved the sea. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. In 1947, he purchased Blodgett's Market, which he operated until his retirement in 1986. He was a licensed real estate broker and worked as Blodgett's Real Estate. He was a charter member of Downeast Merchant Marines, 50 year member and past master of Rising Star Lodge No. 177 A.F. & A.M., honorary trustee of George Stevens Academy, former member of Penobscot School Committee, and founder and first fire chief of Penobscot Volunteer Fire Department, serving 21 years as chief. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Carolyn (Leach); brother, Malcolm and his wife, Myrtle of East Orange, N.J. and Brooksville; sons, Michael and his wife, Anna of Augusta, Gerald and his wife, Debbie of Brunswick, Donald II of Scarborough; and Alden of Penobscot; daughter, Jacqueline Curtis and her husband, Robert of Standish; seven grandchildren, Todd and his wife, Elizabeth of Hallowell, Megan of Portland, Jennifer and Matthew of Brunswick, Chandler, Annemarie and Andrea of Scarborough; one great-granddaughter, Maeve; several nieces, nephews and cousins."

From 1934-1942 he was the teacher and coach at Stetson Grammar School in Northeast Harbor, ME. From 1942-1945 he was an Inspector and Group leader at Pratt-Whitney Aircraft Plant in East Hartford, CT. From 1945 to 1952 as principal and teacher, and coach at Derby Grammar School in Milo. From 1952-1958 as principal and coach at Houlton Junior High in Houlton, ME. 1958-1963 he was Superintendent in Houlton, ME and he was Superintendent in Sebago, ME from 1964-1966. From 1967 to 1969 he was Superintendent of Schools in Woodland in Aroostook County (New Sweden). He was Director of Continuing Education at the University of Maine at Presque Isle, ME from 1970 to 1972 when he retired. He was a member of the Maine Teachers Association, The National Education Association, The American and Maine School Superintendents Associations, The Retired Teachers Association at the county, state and national levels and a member of the Elementary Principals Association a the county and state levels, where he served as first vice president in 1958. He served as president of the Aroostook Teachers Association from 1962-1963. He belonged to the Schoolmasters Club in Hancock and Aroostook Counties and the University of Maine Alumni Association.
