And in the year 1068, the 'Norman invaders' garrisoned the Town. They built a Bailly Castle, and Mottle on the grounds of a ancient Saxon burial mound. And duly recorded Barnstaple in the Domesday Book of 1088,. And the following text is taken from the Domesday Book. (The King has a borough called Beardestaple which King Edward (T.R.E. Tempor Regis Edwardi, Which is translated as the day King Edward was alive and is dated the 5th January 1066). The year the 'Normans' invaded. 'William the Conquer' held Barnstaple, for himself. And it was not until Henry the 1st, came to the throne that a first Lord of Barnstable was created. That being one Judhael of Totnes, who founded the priory of St Magdalene."

Adams, 75, of High Street passed away Thursday, Sept. 18, 2008, at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation and Nursing Care at Gray Birch in Augusta. She was born in Presque Isle on May 10, 1933, a daughter of Elbert Ireland and Effie Roberts Ireland. Joan attended schools in Mapleton. She had been employed for 39 years at New England Tel & Tel in Presque Isle, Augusta and Lewiston. She was a communicant of St. Michael Parish at St. Joseph Church in Gardiner. She was predeceased by three sisters, Genevieve Ferran, Rita Richardson and Lorraine Reynolds; and four brothers, Elbert Ireland Jr., Holman Ireland, Richard Ireland and Roger Ireland. She is survived by her husband, John Q. Adams, of West Gardiner; a stepdaughter, Dianne Sargent, of Freeport; four grandchildren; two sisters, Beulah DeLong, of Bangor, and Dorothy Rosa, of Concord, Mass.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins."
