Samuel Miles the 'William Wistar' warrantee, immediately west of Rebersburg, three hundred and thirty-four acres, late Hubler place, Col. H. Royer, etc. He was a cooper by trade, an excellent mechanic; devoting much attention to astrology, deeply versed in its lore. His attainments in the useful branches of knowledge were of a high order. He died in 1809; leaving a widow; Catherine, and nine children,- John, Agnes (married to Michael Meyer),- Martin Peter Solomon, Catherine (married to Simon Pickle), Mary (married to Abraham Kreamer), Lutzanan (married to Nicholas Bierly), Elizabeth, married to John George Moyer. He was born in Blue Hill, Maine, on June 25, 1939, the youngest of three sons to Arthur H. and Mina Morgan Gray. He was predeceased by his parents; his stepfather, Perc Boardman; brothers, Sheldon and Arthur; daughter-in-law, Gina; and granddaughter, Cori. He is survived by his three sons, David and his wife, Margie, Mark and his wife, Kelle, and Jeff; grandchildren, Chris and his wife, Charlene, Taylor and his fiancé, Stephen, Erin and her husband, Simeon, and Patrick and his girlfriend, Logan; and great-grandchildren, Lucy and Olivia."
[21550] Hugh's dates and his family are discussed in an article posted on the Web at http://members.aol.com/RYouCuz/jackson.htm which also reports: "The Muster Roll of Captain Joseph Chapline of Sharpsburg in the French and Indian War 1757-58 shows that Hugh Jackson received 6 shillings for 6 days. Others, including Robert Jackson, Adam Henthorn and James Henthorn, received the same rate. See Maryland Historical Magazine, 1914, #9, p. 274-279 incl. In 1760 Hugh Jackson Sr. and his son, Robert Jackson Sr., resided in Frederick County, Maryland. This is based on the fact that their signatures appear on a petition shown in the Calender of Maryland State Papers, also known as 'The Black Book #1,' on page 141. This petition is also found in the Archives of Maryland, Volume LVI, pages 502-4. The petition states, "Sundry inhabitants of the Parish of All Saints (Frederick County) to Governor Horatio Sharp and the Upper and Lower Assemblies *** Petition for 3 new levies to build 2 chapels, one below Monocacy ---- 3 previous levies raised enough to repair the church at Frederick Town -- since the two chapels cannot be repaired they will need 120,000 pounds of tobacco in 3 payments 1761, 1762 and 1763 for rebuilding." The signatures included those of Hugh Jackson (Sr.), Robert Jackson (Sr.), James Henthorn, John Henthorn, James Henthorn, yr of John, and others. (A current map shows a town of Monocacy south east of Frederick and a Monocacy River which flows southward to the Potomac River. agm) The above petitioners would have been Hugh Jackson Sr. and his son, Robert Jackson Sr. The other son, Hugh Jr., was only 16 and would not have been a signer in 1760, and David was even younger. The Hugh Jackson Sr. family continued to live in Frederick County as in 1766 Hugh Jackson Sr. and Jr. were among 450 petitioners to Governor Sharpe to call the assembly together for the purpose of issuing bills of credit to pay public creditors. This petition is recorded on page 194 of 'The Black Book #1.' In 1773 Hugh Jackson Sr. apparently lived in the Sharpsburg and Lower Antietam area. This is where he purchased a farm according to his will dated in 1773. The farm was part of a land grant originally made to Joseph Chapline, founder of Sharpsburg. Hugh Jackson's Sr. Will, which I located at the Hall of Records, Annapolis Maryland, was in Washington County Will Book T.S. 1, page 130. The will is dated Sept. 1, 1773. It states that he is a resident of Frederick County, Maryland. (In June 1776 Washington County was erected from Frederick County, hence, when Will was filled on November 7, 1782, he was a resident of Washington County and therefore it is filed under Washington County records. agm) The Will provides that his plantation (farm) was to go to his youngest son, David."

An unverified file in Ancestry.com in 2016 offers: "When John William Stroh was born on November 15, 1859, in Sunbury, Pennsylvania, his father, Solomon, was 34 and his mother, Mary, was 32. He had three brothers and four sisters. He died on July 26, 1923, in his hometown, at the age of 63, and was buried there." Find A Grave memorial 84013558 offers: "J. William Stroh, for nearly 40 years Sunbury's 'village blacksmith,' was unanimously chosen chief of the fire department of the new third-class city of Sunbury, Pa., making the twenty-second successive year that he has been chosen to this post without the semblance of opposition, and Sunbury has had but two fire losses that exceeded $2,000 in eight years, which is believed to be a state, if not a national record, for a volunteer fire department in a 16,000 population town. Mr. Stroh is 62 years old, but can play 'leap frog,' 'lay-low sheep,' and many of the old-time games with the youngsters, so great is his agility, it is declared by friends.
Besides working ten hours at the forge all day, day in and day out, Fire Chief Stroh boasts of a few other jobs. He is director and president of the Central Pennsylvania Odd Fellows' Orphans' Home Association which places he has held 20 and 10 years, respectively; chairman of the Building Committee of Zion Lutheran Church, which has a $250,000 edifice in the process of completion; teaches a Sunday school class that has raised $12,000 for the new church; is secretary of the Protected Home Circle, which has 1,100 members, and which place he has held for 15 years; treasurer of the Sunbury Volunteer Fireman's Relief Association; state fire marshal; a member of the Board of Appeals of the Grand Lodge of Odd Fellows; director of the Sunbury Mutual Life Insurance Company; was active in the old board of trade, makes innumberable speeches, is active in all civic betterment work, and on top if it all, he says he sleeps well, eats well, and if a little younger would enjoy a good old-time game of baseball."

"A shrewd man, was able to accommodate himself to all the changes that took place over the difficult years between 1538 and 1560, the period of his lordship. Though a Catholic, the fifth Earl made himself agreeable to all and his religion did not prevent him from receiving certain of the Beauchief Abbey lands when they were broken up and distributed during the latter years of King Henry VIII. Steering a careful line between the Protestantism of Edward VI, the Catholic Queen Mary and the Protestant Elizabeth I, Francis was able to prevent trouble between the North and South of England.
"The involvement of Francis Talbot, fifth Earl of Shrewsbury, in national political life in the reign of Henry VIII was limited. After his father´s death in 1538, he was an infrequent attender at Court. This should not be surprising. It was unnecessary for noblemen of ancient standing and possessed of large landed estates to serve the King constantly at court. Although, during the years of the Protector Somerset rule of England, he took part in the Scottish invasion.
"The Imperial Ambassador described him as 'one of the most powerful men in the kingdom'. The Duke of Somerset attempted to recruit Shrewsbury when the Earls of Warwick, Arundel and Southampton, with Sir Richard Southwell and Thomas Arundell, began to plot against him. But Shrewsbury joined the large majority of Counsellors that was opposed to Somerset. In 1549 he replaced Robert Holgate, Bishop of Llandaff as Lord President of the Council of the North, a post in which he proved to be an excellent administrator.
"At the death of Edward VI, both Shrewsbury and his son signed the device for the succession to the crown.
"Shrewsbury both advocated and prepared for the Parliament of Mar 1553, and his involvement in the succession conspiracy was reluctant enough for him to make his peace with Mary and continue to wield his patronage during her reign.
"Shrewsbury did not agree with with the religious settlement of 1559, on Elizabeth's accesion, but again his loyalty to the crown was overcoming any religious scruples. He play little part in government, and died 25 Sep 1560."
