[1348] {Fosters appear in the 18th century at Pembroke, NH - see "Hist. of Pembroke" (Concord, NH, 1895). Is there perhaps a relationship? Also, a Jonathan Foster, b. 21 June 1749 at Ipswich, MA, with his wife Rachel was an early settler in the Castine, ME area and founded the Foster family in the greater Penobscot region - see "The Folks of Majorbigwaduce," Limeburner, Grace (N. Brooksville, ME - typescript at Bangor Public Library), p. 98. Still another Foster family were at Machias in Washington County, ME at the time of the War for Independence, and Col. Benjamin Foster led the militia there during the first naval battle of that war - see "History of Machias," George W. Drisko [Machias: 1904].}

He may be descended from William Pevrel [sic], thought to be a "natural" son of William the Conqueror by Maud, a daughter of Ingleric, an Anglo-Saxon noble; William Pevrel was in charge of the castle of Nottingham in 1068 and held 162 manors, etc. - he had a son William who had descendants. {- "Falaise Roll," M. [48475] The News-Item [Shamokin, Pennsylvania], 9 December 1969," p. 2: "John A. Ruths, 72, of 1439 Popular Street, Kulpmont, died this morning at 12:20 in Ashland State General Hospital, where he was a patient five weeks. Born in Mount Carmel, October 4, 1897, Mr. Ruths was the son of the late William and Pauline (Klawitter) Ruths. He was a carpenter and last worked for Reiner Brothers, Mount Carmel, before retiring 11 years ago. Mrs. Ruths was married June 29, 1918, in St. Paul's Evangelical United Brethren Church, Mount Carmel, to the former Carrie Raybuck. His death terminates a marital union of over 51 years. Mr. Ruths was a member of All Saints Lutheran Church, Kulpmont, and Social Civic Club, Mount Carmel. Survivors, in addition to the widow, include two sons, Walter, Bristol, and the Rev. Arthur Ruths, pastor of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Hanover; one daughter, Mrs. Wayne (Betty) Evans, Middletown; nine grandsons, three great-grandchildren, and two brothers, George, Mount Carmel, and Walter, Phoenixville."
