Walter (or Gautier), "of Longton Castle, Hereford," accompanied William the Conqueror and was at the Battle of Hastings with his sons Roger and Hugh. Walter died in a fall while inspecting the new church of St. Peter, Hereford, and is buried in the Chapter House of the Abbey of Gloucester. His wife is Ermeline _______. {"The Roll of the House of Lacy," DeLacy Bellingari (Baltimore: Waverly Press, 1928), which names his children: Roger (living in 1119), Hugh (had Robert, d.s.p.), Walter (1073-1139, Abbot of Gloucester), Emma and Emmelina.} Walter founded the church of St. Peter at Hereford, England, and while it was under construction he fell from a ladder and was killed. Roger, his son and heir, held 96 lordships in 1086 (Domesday), 65 of which were in Gloucestershire with the others in Shropshire, Herefordshire, Worcestershire and Berkshire - he lost his estates due to conspiring with Bishop Odo against King William Rufus, and he later attached himself to Robert de Mowbray.
