[43237] Find A Grave Memorial 106266096 offers: "Nicholas was the son of Sir Robert Beck of Tene. He married Jane, daughter of Rafe Stafford, Knight of the Garter and first Earl of Stafford, and Katherine Hastang. He served in the famous Crecy campaign, and was probably in the great fight of the feudal lord, Ralph, Baron Stafford being attached to the King's division, and it is certain that he took part in the seige of Calais, because he had during its progress letters of attorney dated March 20, 1347, describing him as of the retinue of Ralph, who was abroad in the King's service. In 1359 he was again in the retinue of Ralph, now Earl of Stafford. In 1261, Prince Lionel of Clarence (son of Edward III) was appointed Lieutenant of Ireland and was accompanied thither by a body of men at arms commissioned by Ralph Stafford. Nicholas Beck was a knight with him. He left two daughters, Elizabeth and Margaret."

[23302] "My dad is the epitome of all I want to become. I was not born until he was 40 years old so much of his youthful indescetions had past and he honed his parenting skills onthe other 6 kids in the family. He was not active in the church for much of my childhood, but he was always supportive and encouraging for those of us who were. I am thankful for repentance, because my dad taught me how to use it. He also taught me how to avoid needing to use it for the more severe things. I love my dad and hope that all I know of him will be passed on to my kids. I hope they learn to love him through me. I hope they turn their hearts to him to see that in many ways he was a pioneer in the Haws family, introducing us to the gospel and accepting not only the truths but the works of the gospel that will bless us all eternally." - by his son who provided much of the information in the imported GEDCOM for this family.

This note accompanies William's file at http://trees.wmgsw.org in 2013:
From Lincoln's History of the Town of Hingham: "William was the progenitor of all who have borne this surname in Hingham and vicinity. He came to New England in 1635, and early in the autumn of that year located in Hingham with others who were passengers on the ship he came in. July 3, 1636, he has a house-lot of five acres granted him, on what is not South, nearly opposite West St. The lot was bounded east by John Winchester, west by William Buckland, and included within its limits the establishment now [1893] owned by heirs of the late Ebenezer Gay, Esq. The surname Hersey, or Hersy, is a very ancient one, and probably of French origin, as it appears among the list of noblemen and gentlemen who went over to England with William the conqueror. In Hingham it is still one of the more numerous of the surnames of the early settlers; and it has well represented the industrious as well as the enterprising and influential portion of the inhabitants of the town. At the time of the trouble about the election of officers for the train band, 1644-1645, William Hersey was assessed a heavy fine for supporting the views of Rev. Peter Hobart and his friends; and the family rate towards the erection of the new meeting-house was the largest but one upon the list. He was undoubtedly a native of England, and perhaps of Old Hingham; but the place and date of his birth have not as yet been definitely ascertained. The christian name of his wife was Elizabeth. She died in Hingham 8 Oct. 1671. He died 22 March, 1657-58. In his will, dated March 9, 1657-58, proved 29 Apr. following, gives to son William 'ye house and home Lott that he now Lives in and ye penn plaott before his gate, and ye Lott I bought of Matthew Chafey at ye Capts Tent,' etc.; also valuables to sons John and James; to daughters 'Francis' (Frances), Elizabeth, and Judith, £5 each; 'to my grand children John Croade and William Hersie, 40s. each. Aall ye rest of my Land, housing, goods, etc., to my wife Elizabeth during her life as a widow.' Wife Elizabeth, executrix. Overseers, 'sousine John Farrington, Thomas Marsh, and my sonne in Law Richard Croade.' Inventory appraised 28 Apr. 1658, by Moses Collier and Thomas Marsh at £419 13s. 6d. 'Husbandman.' Freeman March, 1638; selectman 1642, 1647, and 1650; artillery company 1652. Resided on South St."
