INDEX

[6549] Philip was head instructor of the waterfront and yacht broker for the Maine Maritime Academy in Castine, ME (2000). "Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]," 19 March 2021: "Bucksport and Lake Wales, Fla. - Philip Vincent Harman, 84, died in his sleep at his Bucksport home on February 27, 2021, after several months of declining health. He was born in Holden on November 11, 1936, the son of Calvert Joseph Harman and Helen Francis Harman (Hall/Gray). The family moved from Castine to Bangor in 1948, then to Orono and briefly Brewer, before returning to Castine for good in 1952. He graduated from Castine High school in 1955. After high school, he painted houses in Castine for Linc Sawyer and Donny Hutchins, before going to work on the Maine Maritime Academy training ship in 1960 as a maintenance crewman alongside his brothers Richard and Waldo. He also met and married the first great love of his life, Rachel L. Farnham of Penobscot in 1960. He worked on the ship until after the 1962 MMA cruise when, with one son born and another on the way, he transferred to MMA's Waterfront Operations in order to work shoreside. He had excellent mechanical and carpentry skills. He also knew not only how to work with marine paints, varnishes and fiberglass, he understood how those materials worked. His skills, craftsmanship and knowledge of marine maintenance, together with his boat handling and people skills, eventually led to his being appointed Director of MMA's Waterfront Operations. During his early years, the Waterfront crew had been just Walter 'Goggy' Witham, Ken Jones, Bert Haskell and Phil, housed in an old Quonset hut. By the time he took over the Waterfront, the academy was expanding, and so was the Waterfront. He was up to the challenge. He was an integral part of the design and planning of the Payson Hall construction and the Rogers Hall building expansion in 1981-84; the 1987 partnership with the Association for Research on the Gulf of Maine and MMA (which led to the ARGO research vessel being based out of Castine) and the schooner Bowdoin becoming part of the MMA fleet in 1989. He believed that MMA students could learn a lot about ship handling and seamanship with extensive hands-on experience on smaller boats, especially sailboats. MMA had joined the New England Interscholastic Sailing Association (NEISA), the largest conference in the Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) in the 1970's. Even before becoming Waterfront Director and throughout his tenure there, he worked to develop the school sailing team's competitive credentials and in doing so, give MMA students the best possible on-the-water experiences. Starting with old 26 foot row boats that could be rigged to sail, he built the team up; first from a fleet of eight Larks and a few random boats, to a fleet of twenty 420's and 16 Lasers, along with Shields and Colgates. He was the backbone of MMA's participation in ICSA and NEISA and recruiting financial and administrative support for the programs. He managed a boat donation program that helped fund the dingy program and the summer 'big boat' racing program. So strong was that program that shortly after his retirement, MMA's sailing team won the first national championship in school history. In 2004, he received the ISCA's 'Lifetime Service Award,' and was inducted into the ICSA Hall of Fame in 2005. His name was added to the permanent Hall of Fame display at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. Although proud of these honors, he always made sure to credit the support of the administration, donors, and the great sailing coaches the team has had, and most of all to the hardworking MMA students that crewed the boats. During this same period, MMA's small powerboat fleet swelled from a few dozen to nearly a hundred. The Payson facilities and more boats meant more opportunities for students. He was committed to providing students with the most and best hands-on learning opportunities possible. He was an integral part of the creation of MMA's tug-and-barge training program, starting with the donation of the 76 foot tug 'Pentagoet' in 1983 and then the 230 foot barge in 1984. He also made sure MMA's waterfront was part of the greater maritime community, helping the town with waterfront activities, helping the marine patrol and coast guard in search operations, or helping the local boatyard or broken down vessels in a pinch. He was widely known and respected throughout the maritime community in New England. He was friendly and outgoing, but spoke frankly and directly (unless telling some off-color sea story). His direct and honest approach endeared him to generations of MMA alumni; and to his waterfront crew. He retired in 2002, having reached the rank of Commander (he liked to call himself 'Commander of the Bagaduce Navy,' in reference to the river that flows into the Castine Harbor). He once said that spending his life's work teaching 'the kids' at MMA kept him young. He appreciated the many times that alumni looked him up if they were in the area to share fond memories of the waterfront. He was also popular with MMA trustees and several of the large donors over the years, who knew that if asked he would give them an unvarnished answer to any question. MMA named one of its two home intercollegiate sailing events in his honor, and since 2010 the Philip Harman Cup has been sailed annually in Castine. Despite his professional accomplishments, his real life's passion was always his family. He married the first love of his life, Rachel Farnham of Penobscot in 1960 and their first son, Michael, was born in November of that year. Their second son, Joseph, was born in January of 1963. There wasn't a lot of extra money in those early days, and the couple both worked hard to provide for their children. They built a home and a life in Penobscot; and were very much in love. He taught his sons the important lessons of life, and spent every free minute doing things for them, and with them, often outdoors hunting, ice fishing or fishing on the ocean. He was completely unselfish with his time and energy for his wife and sons, and instilled in the boys a lifelong sense of confidence, which was the source of their later successes. Fate intervened just two years after he became Waterfront Director, when Rachel developed cancer. He stood by her with unflinching love and support for the next twelve years until the cancer finally took her away in 1993. He later said this was the most trying time of his life. By then his sons had grown and gone to school; Michael was an attorney and Joseph had graduated from MMA and became a Merchant Marine Engineer. He spent a lot of time with them before meeting the second great love of his life, Jeanette Carrier, of Bucksport. They married in 2000. He said several times that he felt extremely lucky because while many men never find true love, he believed he had twice found it. Both of his wives certainly felt they had, too. His greatest joys in life were undoubtedly his grandchildren. He intently followed their every academic and athletic achievements and went to many of their games and awards. He saw Lucas, Grace and Sam graduate from John Bapst High School and go on, Lucas and Sam to MMA and Grace to the University of Maine. He was very proud of all their many accomplishments. He was also very close to his stepgrandson, Scotty, now a freshman at Hermon High School, who visited he and Jennie often. He was predeceased by his first wife, Rachel; his parents; his stepfather, Ellis Gray; his brother, Henry Harman and Henry's wife, Helen of Texas; his brother, Richard Harmon and Richard's wife, Abigail of Massachusetts; and his brother, Waldo Harmon of Castine; and his nephew, Harlan Harman of Texas. He is survived by his wife, Jeanette, of Bucksport; his sons, Michael P. Harman, Esq. and his wife, Deborah of Penobscot and Millinocket, and Joseph P. Harman and his wife, Christine of Veazie; stepdaughter, Billi Jo Hewey and her husband, Joe of Carmel; his grandchildren, Lucas, Samuel and Grace Harman of Veazie; and his stepgrandson, Scotty Austin of Carmel; his sister, Sylvia (Harmon) Young and her husband, Jack of New Hampshire; niece, Holly (Harman) Jackson of Texas; niece, Amy (Harmon) Gibney and her husband, Rob of New Hampshire; and nephew, Chris Harmon of New Hampshire."
