[6617] "Hartford Courant. 19 June 2008," p. B09: "Orien V. Sledge, 85, of Berlin, formerly a long time resident of Plainville, passed away on Monday (June 16, 2008). He was the beloved husband of Jean K. (Hoffman) Sledge. He was predeceased by his wife, Eileen (Connor) Sledge. Born on September 22, 1922 in Springville, MS he was the son of the late Romer W. and Maizy (McGregor) Sledge. Orien proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard the LST 1018 and saw action in the Pacific as a Motor Mechanic Mate 2nd Class which was responsible for LST engine maintenance and operation. After the war, he worked for Marlin Rockwell/TRW as a tool and die maker for 41 and a half years until his retirement in 1983. Following retirement, he continued to be active working part-time for West Cemetery, Plainville. He also was a member of the Congregational Church of Plainville and served as a Deacon. Orien was a member of Frederick-Franklin Lodge #14 A.M. & A.F. for over 50 years along with being a member of the VFW Post 10732 in Berlin. In his free time, he enjoyed his times square dancing with the 'Bucks and Does' Square Dance Club of Berlin along with golf, working in his garden, watching NASCAR and camping with 'The Break-A- Ways'. Most importantly, he loved his family and spending time with them. Besides his wife Jean, he leaves his children, Marilyn Whittlesey and her husband, Richard of Blue Hill, ME, Gerald Sledge and his wife, Frances of Bristol; grandchildren, Laura Tobin and her husband, William of St. Johnsbury, VT, Janet Marple and her husband, Matthew of Pepperell, MA, Emily Czarnecki and her husband, Wayne of Bristol, Adam Sledge and his friend, Sara of Bristol; great-grandchildren, Justin, Andrew, Julia and Ethan Marple, and Liam Tobin; two stepsons, Jeffrey Krause and his wife, Catherine of Old Saybrook, Thomas Krause and his wife, Lori of Port Charlotte, FL; step- grandchildren, Stephen, Francis and Madelyn Krause; a brother, Trellie Reid Sledge and his wife, Bobbi of Tupelo, MS; and several nieces and cousins. He was predeceased by his sister, Margie Sue Metts." Orien is son of Romer Wilson Sledge (b. 11 April 1898 in Springville, MS, d. 2 August 1974, of Water Valley, MS) and his wife Maizy McGregor (b. 29 July 1902 at Springville, MS to Willis McGregor [d. 1924] and wife Martha Mattie Carpenter [1870-1945]). Romer is son of Louis Wilson Sledge (b. 5 July 1867 at Thaxton, MS, d. 8 May 1930) and wife Nora Nelson (b. 12 July 1876, d. 27 March 1934 at Toccopola, MS). His grave marker states "MOMM2 US Navy - World War II".
