"The Selinsgrove Times-Tribune, 23 March 1922" p. 1 & 8: "George Miller Witmer was born at Dundore on July 14, 1859, and died at Salem on March 17th. He was the only child of David Witiner and Sarah Miller, his wife, and the grandson of the late George D. Miller. His ancestry was of the pioneer blood of this part of the state. His parents removed to Salem in 1872. Mr. Witmer conducted the general store there for thirty years, and disposed of that to give his undivided attention to the Clifford Flouring Mills, which he started a decade ago and developed into a business of large proportions. Mr. Witmer was married on October 17, 1880, to Sarah Amelia, the daughter of George C. Moyer and wife, Elizabeth Fisher Moyer, of Freeburg. Mrs. Witmer, three sous and three daughters survive. They are: Katherine Moyer, at home, teacher in Penn township public schools. George David, of Middleburg, married to Maud Isabelle Runkle and Junior member of the Clifford Mills firm, Edith Rose, wife of Rev. Arthur C. Harris, Lutheran minister in Gordon, Ralph, cashier of the Allenwood Bank, Allenwood, and Calvin Arthur, of Salem, married to Mabel Charlotte Moyer and associated with the flouring mill business, Eleanor Hazel, at home, a teacher In Penn township public schools. Mr. Witmer was one of the well known and prominent men of the county. He became a justice of the peace in 1892 and filled the position the remainder of his life. He was a leader in all the affairs of the community and left his impress upon all his works. In 1890 and 1891 Mr. Witmer was chairman of the county Republican committee, and took an active part in that memorable battle which was climaxed by the election of the late Harold M. McClure as President Judge of the Union and Snyder counties districL Always an active Republican, he took a strong stand for clean politics, but never cared tor political preference for himself. Mr. Wltmer was a member of the Reformed Church, in the counsils of which he will by missed.The deceased man was a firm believer In higher education. All his children are alumni of Susquehanna University. Mr. Winner stood high in esteem. This was attested by the large concourse of friends, relatives and neighbors who gathered at his late home on Tuesday morning to pay their measure of respect to the departed man. The services were held from his late home and continued In the Lutheran and Reformed church at Salem. Interment was made in Union cemetery at Selinsgrove. Rev. J. F. B. Greisemer of Sellnsgrove, officiated. Funeral ritual of the Masonic Lodsre was read over Mr. Winner's grave by members of the local Lafayette Lodge No. 194. F. and A. M., of which Mr. Wltmer was a past master."
