[44663] This couple is from the 2018 unverified file at https://www.genealogy.com/ftm/m/a/n/Ray-J-Mann which states John is son of John Drake and Elizabeth Rogers.
Michael, perhaps a French Huguenot refugee, came to Topsfield, MA before revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685. Michael m. Mary (Reed?). He was a large landowner. Around 1660 he settled on the farm astride the old Salem Road, and the farm remained in the family ever since. His son, Michael, Jr., became Topsfield's first medical doctor. Michael (Sr.) will was proved in 03-1717. {see "The True Genealogy of Dunnel and Dwinnell Family," Henry Gale Dunnell, M.D. (New York: Charles B. Richardson, 1862).} Other sources for Dwinnell family genealogy are "Dwinnell, Dunnell, ... Genealogy" (1974 reprint, Reno Nev.); "Gen. Dict. of First Settlers of New England," James Savage (Balt., MD: Gen. Pub., 1986), Vol. 1 & 2; "Abridged Comp. of American Genealigy: First Families of America," Vol. 1 & 6 (not considered reliable).
Arnold Dunnells (adunnell@gibralter.net) shared 24 July 2001 via email: "There is no 'proof' that Michael was a Huguenot, like there is no 'proof' that he came from Scotland to Massachusetts. As Dr Henry Gale Dunnel says in his book, 'Family tradition always said France'. The truth of the matter is we do not know. The main consensus however, is that our origins were French Huguenot, but that Michael himself came here from either Scotland or Ireland. Of the hundreds of family members I have either spoken to, or corresponded with, the split is about 50-50 between Scotland and France. I have many reasons why I support the France via Scotland theory. But they are still just opinions, with no documentations." One LDS Church's unverified IGI File states Michael is "Of, La Rochelle, Charente-Maritime, France" and another states he was b. in "Nantes, Loire Atlantique."

James Dwinell (jdwin492@concentric.net) shared 25 July 2001 via email: "I have a copy of the Dunnel/Dwinell Genealogy you've referenced. In the book, H.G. Dunnel makes NO assertion that Michael Dwinell was a Huguenot. The following passages from the book speculate on Michael Dwinell's ancestry:
p. 6: "I had traditions of the fathers offered me of the Macdonnels of Scotia, and O'Donnells of the Green Isle, of the Duinnels of France, and the crest of the house to prove it, too. But having no ambition of that kind, I have confined my genealogical observation to strict matters of fact, which could be proved by perfect and legal documents in any court in Christendom."
"From these I learn there was residing in the town of Topsfield, Essex county, Mass., a large landholder, owning lands extending from Middleton to Wenham. From whence came he? Family tradition always said France. The Christian names of himself and his children favor that; but still he may have been previously from Scotland or Ireland, the surname would indicate that, for Donnel or Dunnel are old Scotch and English names, very ancient, and at that time the orthography of the English language, especially in article of names, was singularly deficient. How he would have spelled it himself, we can not say, because he had not the habit or custom of writing it himself, and like, some of King John's barons, merely affixed his sign and seal to such documents as his learned scribe had written for him. ..."
I think it's evident that from these passages, Dunnel does nothing more than speculate on the family origin.
Another source does make a half hearted Huguenot claim. This is from "Genelaogical and Personal Memoirs Relating to the families of Boston and Eastern Massachusetts", prepared under the editorial supervision of William Richard Cutter and originally published in 1908. The passage is from page 228 of volume I:
"Michael Dwinell, immigrant ancestor, was born about 1640. Tradition differs as to the origin of the family, some saying it was Scotch, and others French Huguenot. One branch of the family has supposed that the Dwinells came from France, where a Count Dwinell was settled near La Rochelle. The spelling of the surname has always varied. Even at the present day we find his descendants called Dwinell, Dwinnell and Dwinel. The surname as written in the town records of Topsfield, where the pioneer settled, has the following variations; Dewnell, Duenell, Doenell, Donell, Dunell, Dwinnil. But the best early authority is that of Rev. Jospeh Capen of Topsfield, who spelled the name Dwinell on his records from 1684 to 1725. ..."
Word for word versions of this passage have been repeated in similar publications. Here again, the Huguenot connection appears to be speculation.
I have a CD-ROM entitled "Immigrant Histories: Huguenot Settlers in North American and Europe, 1600s-1900s." The CD-ROM was a joint effort between the Genealogical Publishing Company and Family Tree Maker. The CD-ROM contains numerous sources of information and the publisher claims that "This collection is so thorough that there are few Huguenot names for which information is not supplied." The CD-ROM is fully searchable. I've searched the CD-ROM with every variation of the Dwinell spelling. All searches have been negative.
From this, I think it's evident the Huguenot claim is nothing more than speculation, and the claim is not backed up by reliable source information."
