"bapt. 19 Apr. 1592; probably named for his father's own cousin Gregory Stone...; when a young man removed to Nayland, co. Suffolk, whence he emigrated in 1635 to New England, and after a short stay in Watertown, Mass., settled in Cambridge, Mass. For account of him and his descendants, see Part II of `The Gregory Stone Genealogy,' published in 1918." - "Simon Stone Genealogy...," J. Gardner Bartlett (Boston, 1926), p. 39. Gregory and his brother Simon are commemorated by their American descendants by a stained glass window and plaque in the Great Bromley Church in which both were baptised. Kristin Bush (mantra@iamerica.net) wrote via Internet 25 April 1998: The Gregory Stone Genealogy by J. Gardner Bartlett traces Stone back to 1320 in Great Bromely, Essex Co. England. Here is a somewhat brief look. Walter atte Stone b. ~1320 >Simon b. 1450 d. 1506 m. Elizabeth >David Stone of Great Bromely b. 1480 >Simon Stone of Great Bromely b. 1507 will 1557 m. Agnes >Richard of Great Bromely b. 1545 m. Ursula >Gregory b. 1592. Gregory went to America with his brother Simon. Richard and Ursula had 4 children Simon b. 1585, Ursula b. 1588, Mary b. 1590, and Gregory. Richard had 7 children with his first wife Elizabeth Hewitt. Gregory married Margaret Garrad in Nayland in 1635. His brother Simon sailed to the New World on the ship Increase in 1635. Gregory folowed with his second wife Lydia and Children John, Daniel, David, Elizabeth, Samuel and Sarah plus step-children John and Lydia Cooper. They settled in Watertown Mass. He then moved to Newtowne (Cambridge). Gregory was active in the Puritan protests in England; known as a nonconformist he was reprimanded for refusing to kneel before the Archdeaconry of Sudbury. As of 1913, the Stone house was being historically preserved as a permanent example of early New England archetecture. The home was on Linnaen street in Cambridge and the Stone Association had placed an engraved tablet as a tribute to Deacon Gregory. The last stanza on the tablet reads: "Gregory Stone.... The founder of this house - Lived in the homestead hard by on land now of Harvard University - Died November 30, 1672 - Buried in the Cambridge Graveyard - Forefather of a cloud of witnesses who on the stricken grounds of the revolution made good his word." Cf. "Descendants of Daniel Stone of Dorchester, Mass., Waterman Stone, NEHGR (1882) 36:366. Gregory's will is printed in NEHGR (1854) 8:69-70.
