"Bangor Daily Nws [Bangor, Maine]," 25 April 2022: "Bingham - Gifted athlete, Louis Henry Collette, who graduated from Farmington High School in 1947 and was signed by the St. Louis Cardinals in 1948, died Feb. 8, 2022, at the age of 92. Louis was inducted into the Maine Baseball Hall of Fame in 2002. During the induction ceremony, Louis was honored as 'the crème de la crème on the baseball diamond. He was the complete package - he could hit with power, possessed blazing speed on the base paths, and could run down fly balls with the best.' At Farmington, where he was affectonately known as 'Lou' or 'Sonny,' Louis competed in football, basketball, track, and - his first love - baseball. He was named to the Class B All-Maine Football Team, and and was State Champion in the low hurdles. In the days when modern refrigerators were still a luxury, Louis stayed in shape by cutting and hauling ice for his father, Refino Collette. It was here that he would also attend what was then called Farmington State Teacher's College. After playing semi-Pro ball for the Farmington Flyers, he caught the eye of Cardinals' veteran scout John Dickson. Eighteen year old Louis Collette was thrilled to sign with Dickson for $150 a month and a whopping $125 bonus. His first stop was with the Hamilton Red Wing Club in Hamilton, Ontario, where Louis started in center field. He also played for the Geneva Red Birds in the Alabama State League and the Salisbury, Maryland Club in the Eastern Shore League. He played a total of five years of pro ball. With the Korean War heating up, Louis elected to serve at the height of his baseball career. While there were no bonuses in the U.S. Air Force, he spent much of his enlistment playing in U.S.A.F. baseball tournaments at stations such as Lackland and Randolph AFB. Although he eagerly reported for spring training in 1955, Louis unfortunately injured his throwing arm, thus ending a promising pro career. Louis enjoyed several years in the American West with his new bride, Audrey Pettengill, where he graduated with a Master of Science (MS) from the University of Montana (then called Montana State University). True to form, his thesis was on the benefit of isometric training exercise. In 1959 he began a long and storied career as teacher and coach in his home state of Maine, first at Lisbon High School. In his second year at the Falls, Louis steered his football squad to a perfect season and Class C title. He had many similar successes as a multi-sport coach and athletic director at Rockland High and Brunswick Junior High. In his later years, Louis returned to one of the favorite hunting and fishing destinations of his youth, Bingham, Maine. Here, he made his home and met his beloved partner of many years, Francis Gordon.
It was in coaching that Louis Collette found his true calling. 'Always a gentleman,' said his Hall of Fame colleagues, 'he had the respect of his team mates, students, and contemporaries. His sense of propriety, his virtue, and his belief system set him aside from others - he was truly a great athlete.' Louis H. Collette was preceded in death by his wife, Audrey. He is survived by his sister, Eloise Collette; his partner, Francis Gordon; his daughters, Lisa Collette and Lanita Collette; and his grandaughters, Audrey Collette and Kate Collette."

[11725] Louis XI (1423-83), king of France (1461-83), son and successor of Charles VII, who continued his father's work of restoring unity and stability to France after the ravages of the Hundred Years' War. Louis was born in Bourges on July 3, 1423. After joining with discontented nobles in an unsuccessful rebellion against Charles VII in 1440, he was pardoned and made governor of Dauphiné, where he showed great administrative ability. After the death of his first wife, Margaret of Scotland (1425?-45), Louis defied his father by marrying (1447) Charlotte of Savoy. From 1456 to 1461 he lived at the court of Philip the Good, duke of Burgundy. Louis was known as The Spider because of his ugliness and the skill with which he maneuvered against his enemies. After he became king, his greatest antagonist was Charles the Bold, Philip's successor as duke of Burgundy. Charles was influential in forming a conspiracy of nobles called the League of the Public Weal, against Louis in 1465. In his efforts to curb the powers of the great French nobles, Louis relied on the support of the lower nobility and the middle class. After Charles the Bold's defeat and death in 1477, Louis continued the war against Charles's daughter, Mary of Burgundy (1457-82). He added Anjou, Maine, Provence, and other regions to his kingdom in 1480-81; in 1482 he divided the Burgundian territories with Mary's husband, Maximilian of Habsburg (later Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I). During most of his despotic reign Louis relentlessly consolidated the royal power, employing bribery, diplomacy, intrigue, treachery, and, occasionally, war. By consolidating his power, he laid the foundation for the absolute monarchy in France, and by promoting industry and commerce he increased the country's wealth. Louis XI story is the basis for the biographical novel "The Spider King," Lawrence Schoonover (New York: Macmillan, 1954).

She suffered injuries in a fall at home Friday. A resident of Marion six years, she came here from Blanchester. She was the widow of Rev. Abbott Gates Newton, Methodist minister, who died Oct. 10, 1947. Born June 17, 1867, at Felicity, O., she was the daughter of William and Mary Gibson Miller. Her marriage was Aug. 25, 1892. In Marion she was a member of Epworth Methodist Church and an honorary life member of the Women's Society of Christian Service. Surviving are her son. Miller J Newton of Richland Pk. and Mrs Mary K. Birch of the Brightwood Dr. address. She was last of her family. Brief memorial services will be conducted Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in the Boyd Funeral Home on W Columbia St. Rev. Walter C. Eyster of Epworth Church and Rev. V. E. Busier, former pastor, will officiate. The body will be sent to the Hanna Funeral Home at Blan chester where funeral services will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m with Rev. S. W. Wiant and Rev. H. J. Holcombe officiating. Burial will be in the Odd Fellows Cemetery there."
