[29256] See "The Register" (Bston: New England Historic Genealogical Society, Summer 2019), Vol. 173, pp. 197-205 for an extended discussion of this family in which ALL of Isaac's children are attributed to Mary. Mary is first wife of Isaac. "Ancestors of American Presidents, 2009 Edition," Gary Boyd Roberts (Boston: NEHGS, 2009), p. 571, shows a line of descent from them to U. S. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Larry Overmire posted on http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com this hypothesis: "The main documented source for clues to Mary Norris's ancestry apparently come from the Register of Maryland?s Heraldic Families, which contains a curious note on page 279: 'Mary Norris, granddaughter of Sir Henry Norris of England, came on the ship 'Mayflower' to Plymouth , MA. and married Isaac Allerton, and came to live in Westmoreland Co. VA in 1650. They became neighbors of Sir Thomas Gerrard and Joh n Lee, who jointly built the first club house of America, 1670.' This is odd. Mary Norris died in 1621 and couldn't have moved to Westmoreland Co., VA. However, Isaac Allerton Jr., t he son of Isaac and Fear Brewster, did move to Westmoreland Co. and was co-owner of a mill with John Lee. Somehow the writers of the Register of Maryland's Heraldic Families got at least some of their information confused. If Mary was the granddaughter of Sir Henry Norris, and there is no reason to doubt it, then which Sir Henry Norris was it? The Register provides a clue on pg. 278, 'John Norris, son of Sir Henry II came to Virginia from England and Barbados on the ship Truelove 1635.' The Register does not say how or if John and Mary are related, but the fact that the writers make a distinction between 'Sir Henry Norris' and 'Sir Henry II' indicates that we are talking about two separate individu als, the father and his son. The elder Sir Henry Norris (abt 1525-1601) was the distinguished 1st Baron Norreys of Oxfordshire and Berkshire, a friend of Queen Elizabeth. I am speculating that he is the one the Register is referring t o as being Mary;s grandfather. But who was her father? That remains a mystery. Sir Henry had six sons--William, John , Edward, Henry II, Thomas, and Maximilian. William died in 1579, before Mary was born. Edward and his wife had no issue. John was famous in his own right and if Mary had been his daughter, she most certainly would have been described as such. That leaves Henry II, Thomas or Maximilian as the most likely candidates."
