[51038] '"The Ellsworth American [Ellsworth, Maine], 19 June 2013": "Southwes Harbor - Maxine M. (Stanley) Clark died June 10, 2013, at her home, surrounded by loved ones. She was born Feb. 20, 1924, at home in Seawall, the daughter of Albra (Staples) and Leverett Sherman Stanley. Maxine and her three siblings spent a part of each year during childhood on Great Duck Island, where their father was the lighthouse keeper. The family moved to Bass Harbor in 1940 when Leverett became keeper of the Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse. Maxine graduated from Pemetic High School, where she was class president. A few of her first jobs were selling tickets at the Neptune Movie Theater over Reeds Store in McKinley, and running a canning machine at the Underwood Cannery. As a young military wife, she lived for a time in Puerto Rico, where her first son was born. Back on MDI, she had two more children, and started and operated The Coffee Pot Restaurant in Bass Harbor with Flossie Colson in the mid- 50s. After a second marriage she had her fourth child, and the family eventually settled in Southwest Harbor. She turned their Clark Point Road house into a tourist home during the summer months, and in her free time, often took her sons out on the harbor in a rowing skiff to haul lobster traps, a career one of them still pursues 55 years later. She was also a substitute teacher. After moving to a new home on Freeman Ridge, which Maxine and her husband helped build with Jasper Hutchins, she started her own real estate business, which she ran for many years, at one point serving as president of the Hancock/Washington County Board of Realtors. When her children were grown, she turned the family home into Island Watch Bed and Breakfast, running it mostly by herself, and making many close friendships with guests who returned year after year. She was one of the founding members of Harbor House, served for a time on the Planning Board in Southwest Harbor, and was a fierce advocate for having the MDI High School at a time when it was still an unpopular idea in Southwest Harbor. As a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, she served as Grand Ruth for the state of Maine. Maxine was known to her family and friends as an independent and hard-working woman, not afraid to tackle any project, from sewing her daughters bridal gown, to growing vegetable gardens, to doing repairs on the B&B, and even trying out motorcycling for the first time at age 60. She especially enjoyed entertaining family and friends with big dinners at holidays. She is survived by her four children, Garry Blanchette of Seal Cove, Paul Blanchette of Sunset, Margery Buck of Seal Cove, and John Clark Jr. of Town Hill; two stepchildren, Tom Clark of Ellsworth and Jennifer Dam of Lynge, Denmark; grandchildren, Adam, Amanda, Chris, Laura, Vicky, and Zachary; nine great-grand-children; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers, Perley Stanley and Lyford Stanley; and her sister, Charlotte Black. The family gives special thanks to her live-in caregiver Vanessa Buys, whose devoted care allowed Maxine to stay in the home she loved on Freeman Ridge, surrounded by her pets."
